CANDLES ("Light It Up") is inspired by the story of Hanukkah, the Jewish wintertime festival of lights. In the Hanukkah story, a small group of Jewish fighters called Maccabees defeated the Greek empire and reclaimed the right to live and worship freely. The song’s lyrics capture the relief, anguish and hope of the victorious fighters returning home to rebuild what was lost. In rededicating the Temple, the Maccabees found only a single flask of oil, which miraculously lasted eight days until more could be made – a “fuel that burns far too long.” CANDLES (Light It Up) seeks to universalize the message of the Hanukah story to all those who identify with the struggle for a noble cause and the idea that achieving one’s goal is just the beginning of the journey. Of course, it also celebrates the power of light to brighten up the dark, cold winter nights spent among close friends and family.
