The MiG-25 “Foxbat” had been a cause of concern for U.S. military leaders for years due to the belief that it was a highly advanced fighter jet capable of both incredible speed and agility. But when Viktor Belenko defected to a Japanese airport on September 6th 1976, it gave U.S. inspectors a chance to look inside the aircraft, which is when they realized it was more a paper tiger than a menace of the skies. #shorts

So in which country was the aforementioned civilian airport located?
Answer: He did land in Japan, was arrested, requested asylum, defected to the USA, revealed secrets and tactics to the CIA and USAF and even married an American woman. The aircraft was disassembled by Japan and the USA and studied before being returned to an irate Soviet Union. Japan billed the Soviets for damage to the runway. The Soviets billed Japan for missing Mig-25 parts.

I'm sure his favorite song would end up being Jackson Browne's "Running on Empty".

The MiG Foxbat. I worked with a guy who had been in the Air Force and his wife worked in intelligence. The complete books of plans and specs of all the systems were delivered and ended up in a cardboard box in the trunk of their car until the following Monday morning. They didn’t go anywhere but home.

I remember the Viktor Balenko incident. It was like Russia`s gift to the USA in its Bicentennial year 😅

His story is in a book titled Mig pilot fantastic read, I believe the Mig 25 was developed out fear of the XB 70 that never got past the experimental stage two prototypes were built one of them had A midair collision with A chase plane no fault of the XB 70 the chase plane lost control in the turbulent wake of the enormous XB 70 and the program was discontinued that and advances in missile technology would have made them obsolete, but the XB 70 was so intimidating to the Russians they developed the Mig 25, the XB 70 defense was it speed.

The US military was literally afraid of the Soviet's Mig-25 the whole time that they developed the F-15 in response. After they managed to inspect the plane when this defector pilot landed at Japan. They found out that the Mig-25 was just good at flying fast and high, but when coming to maneuverability, air combat and stuff, it's a shit plane. Ironically, the reason the Soviet Union developed the Mig-25 was bcoz they were afraid of the SR-71. It was developed with the primary purpose of shooting down the Blackbird but it never achieved that success.

The fuel was clearly not that well calculated to prevent the pilots making Japan. As the first that tried it made it!

Wikipedia doesn't say it crashed. Here is the text: On September 6, 1976, he flew to Japan on a MiG-25P interceptor and handed over to foreign authorities a plane with a lot of secret, at that time, equipment on board. He received political weapons in the United States, and later received American citizenship.
