Imagining 80% of something getting destroyed is very overwhelming, especially considering if it’s the LITERAL CITY THAT YOU LIVE IN! The pure scope of the destruction also often overshadows the aftermath. In a horrific scenario, survivors had to deal with ghastly smells and the charred remains of what once was a profitable business or their loved one. Podcast on this episode is live now ONLY ON PATREON!

On March 21, 1788, a devastating fire tore through the French Quarter of New Orleans, reducing much of the city to ashes. The Great Fire of 1788 destroyed over 850 buildings, leaving thousands homeless and reshaping the architectural landscape of the city. Under Spanish rule at the time, New Orleans would rebuild, but this disaster marked a turning point in its history—leading to the distinct Spanish Colonial-style architecture that still defines the French Quarter today.

In this episode of Quick History, presented by Louisiana Dread, we explore:
✔ How the fire started and why it spread so quickly
✔ The widespread destruction and its impact on the city’s residents
✔ The role of Spanish authorities in the aftermath and rebuilding efforts
✔ How the fire influenced New Orleans' iconic architecture

The Great Fire of 1788 is one of the most defining disasters in New Orleans history, shaping the city we know today.
