I could totally see you doing a comic that uses these two styles side by side vs. trying to make your two styles into one hybrid, if that makes sense. Like, what if the cover and certain full page panels were in your painting style? I think they could live side by side and fulfill different roles. Love your videos, thank you for sharing!

I've been making art seriously for probably 6 or 7 years at this point, and I'd still say I don't have a distinct style. I love painting, but I also love sculpting, ceramics, digital art, cartoony styles, more realistic styles, etc. I've really been coming to terms lately that as an artist I don't have to have something "distinct" or an artist's trademark of sorts to make my journey as an artist more meaningful. I think constantly trying new things and switching between mediums is what makes art exciting

I actually really liked that thumbnail sketch with "the creepy net guy" 😅. I love when there's a visceral quality to a piece, when you can almost feel it. Might sound weird and convoluted but I could sort of feel how it would be like being stuck under it, uncomfortable and restrictive. And for some reason he was smiling and ok with it, he had accepted his situation. I don't know but that's the sort of art that really speaks to me . It makes you both think about it and feel it. Didn't mean to analyze a simple thumbnail sketch that deeply hehe 😅. On a different note I have that exact prismacolor set too and have had it for years, but I haven't really used it much either. It's sad because it might have a perfect use for me but I just don't gravitate towards it.

I haven't watched the full video yet but from thumbnail alone I can say that's one style but two different executions, if it makes sense.

I can clearly pinpoint stylistic choices both images have in common and the technical differences that are product of the same artist adapting to two different media.

you have no idea how refreshing this is to hear!! I've been a traditional artist for years and in the past I've dabbled in digital art, but the last couple years I was in a traditional art block and dove into digital art and fan art and its been so much fun! I don't know how to describe it but traditional and digital art kind of fulfills a different part of my art brain. Also, same, my digital art and my traditional pieces are complete different styles and I've been trying to combine them some how, but maybe its ok that they are their own entity and I shouldn't try and force them together. I'm sure in some way even subconsciously the two practices are influencing one another and I just don't see it lol. Great video and lovely art as always!!

So many things to comment on on this wonderful video. I always love hearing more about your comics. I oddly liked that net thumbnail as well? I'm totally with you on the colored pencils. It's very cool to see other people use them, but I could not be less interested in using them for anything more than an underlying sketch haha. The "fee fo fo fum" made me laugh out loud.

How you feel about your art is of course the most important thing. However, for what it's worth, I've *always* felt like you've had a very strong style. In all the years I've followed you, I don't think there's ever been a time when your work has come up in my feed and I didn't know it was yours. I can relate to feeling unsure about your own style though. Especially for me doing so many tutorials based on specific reference photos for others to replicate, it's easy for me to get lost in a head space of "I don't have a style, I just paint what I see" vibes. It's an active effort to step out out myself though and realize that not everyone would paint the same image the same way. I feel you've always had a strong voice though :)

Thank you for being such a consistent muse for me. Your videos always inspire me to want to create, and I'm just so grateful for that 🥰

I have that too!! I go through phases of drawing characters digitally and working on story stuff, and then phases of painting or wanting to draw things that are more abstract or conceptual. And i have that same struggle where it's like I'm always real focused on one or the other and it's hard to transition from one to the other. All of what you said really resonated with me you're definitely not alone in that

11:05 i do!! i agree so much. i love looking at all sorts of different art styles and loving them all equally! i used that energy to help lessen the "your art must look like THIS" pressure i put on myself, and let myself have a diverse range of styles in diff mediums. it doesn't always work 100% (we're all our own worst critics) but still ♡

you getting distracted in the middle of explaining your momentum and then a while later going "there we go it's coming back" was so relatable HAHAH i love your sense of humour so muchhh

I admire your layering so much! I get so nervous to lay down dark colors in my paintings, even when I know the color is going to lighten, leaving me with less contrast than I would like every time. Watching you paint makes me want to be bolder with my layering and darkening of shadows

My favorite Animal Crossing houses to decorate have been the ones where I can do sort of a dreamy starry space, where the only light comes from star lamps, glowing wallpaper, candles, etc. I have however run into the annoying limits to how many lights you can have in a room before the game refuses to render the cast light 😂

I can’t relate to the digital part but I can relate to the struggle with finding artistic point. I’m learning that the artwork I would hang in my house is not the art I have fun creating. I have to really look at them as two different things. For me, making art is about the process and I’m trying to learn how to embrace that.

Wow, what a topic! After working on traditional art (watercolour) for the last 4 years, I finally took the huge jump to start to learn digital art. That has been a very challenging process. My poor old brain just struggles so much with the technical side of it when I just want to create. But we must persist!
I love your traditional style and calm presentation. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. 💕

I have sooo many different different artists I love and all of them have very very different styles it could go from a simple cartoon to a Van Gogh painting but both inspire and excite me to create, that’s what I love about art it is so versatile and there’s so much you can create with it and there’s no rules to what you can and can’t make I love both painting realistically and drawing cartoons it depends on your mood and what you want

I struggle with finding my art style so much! I know that if you want to make it as an artist, you have to have that unique voice that sets you apart from other people and also it seems that the most successful artists focus on mastering one medium. That is really smart because as you said, one person has only so much time and energy. But I personally find focusing on one medium very limiting. One day I want to use watercolors, then I want to oil paint, then use colored pencils and markers and then there are periods when I focus on digital art. And my style changes with each of those mediums🙈 I honestly don't know what to do about this. It feels like my art journey is stuck at the moment. Why must there be so many nice art supplies, so many interesting styles to try and so little time! 😂

I love doing loose watercolor florals but I joined the marketing committee for my living learning community at uni so I have to do a lot of graphic design work on my iPad so I definitely understand that weird switch that makes you feel stuck so I am really just focusing on making art on my iPad now until I can give my full attention to watercolors again

I totally struggle with the same thing as you! I often feel like I have to choose and be really firm in my choice and refuse to do anything else to just really hone in on that one skill. But, I don’t always, lol it is a struggle! And so great to hear someone talking about it!
