ArcoLinux Review | Distro Delves S2:Ep30

Is ArcoLinux the best Arch Linux installer out there? Is it even a Linux distribution in its own right? How does it perform compared to vanilla Arch?

Distro Delves is a series where I try out various Linux Distros (or other OSes) and give my thoughts about them at the end of the episode.

this is a flagship edition of arco for maximum choice....
there are other 2 varients namely arcoLinuxB and arcoLinuxD in which you can do custom installations

the flagship edition is like try everything that is available and remove all the unnecessary sw.

Did you notice that the main arcolinux iso contains XFCE, Openbox and i3? Erik also puts an incredible amount of work into polishing his releases. It definitely deserves a closer look and you should check out his youtube channel.

With this type of video, I realize that distribution matters, there are many people saying that distribution does not matter, but every time I change OS, I have a completely different experience, even with a similar distribution.

"If you fail to prepare you prepare to fail."
Visiting any distro's website prior to review would help a lot to avoid bold but nonsense statements... Just as the majority of the users would do prior to installing any OS or applications.
You might will even understand the concept behind Arco and its basic attributes.
Just a few basic examples:
1. no, xfce is not the "default desktop", because you could install it with any of the 16 individual ISOs. (just as I did with Plasma and Plasma only) The website is your friend...
2. the "flagship" xfce comes preinstalled with openbox and i3 as well (select the one you like prior to user login)
3. "it is not the best looking"? did you try it with any of the countless other themes/icon sets available either out of the box or to download+install? I could also list (even if I don't want to) a ton of distros that look kinda "ugly" (including whatever you run) without customization according to my taste.
4. you could install a very basic Arco with apps you like/want only. What is the trick? Preparation a.k.a. "RTFW" (which refers to the website again)
BTW I'm not an Arco fanboy. I just use it as much as I use MX and openSUSE.

I used Arco back in when it was Archmerge. After Erik renamed it to Arco it was still good, but now somehow it's not as good as it was. Don't know why, but it's changed a lot.

It would be a nice analysis if you didn't "forget" (?) to mention that this is a distro to learn (Arch)Linux, to learn how it works and to create your own iso's and configure and customize your own personal distribution. You can do it the hard way, by installing from terminal the Arch way, or in an easier way now.
It could be thought that you oversaw such aspect mentioned in the website where you downloaded the iso from, if it wasn't because it is written and mentioned everywhere there.
I just met this distribution two weeks ago. And you can criticize many things about them, that it is chaotic for newbies like me, that they are very helpful in their social networks (that's the purpose, to learn, and that's why they include their social networks in the welcoming screen) although some people are the typical Linux snobs not very friendly to newbies, that they change so many things and include to many things with the purpose to let you learn, that there is way too much information organized in a historical arguably inefficient way, etc.
But I think you missed completely the point. I sincerely doubt that you even saw their website at all.
By the way, the wallpaper of your shown installation is of a previous past version, not the one you would have if you had installed your distribution in recent days. Although your video is less than one day old...
And seriously, the wallpapers is what compensates you the other important errors of the distribution? Was that ironic? Really?
I was advised your channel as a serious neutral objective analytic channel, but it didn't seem to me.
I will probably not stick to ArcoLinux once I learn more, but forgetting to mention about their primary purpose to be a distribution to learn, is something quite a dubious thing to do, in my opinion.

How to make a good distro settings manager:
1: Don't make anything in it always on.
2: Make it activate and configure external components not related to the center, almost like a bunch of links.
3: Give it an API so that other applications can have a link to their settings.
4: …Yeah, I really just want all my configuration tools in one place.

I haven't tried it, so opinion based only on this review: but seems pretty cool that "its different". congrats to try to cater to a specific "experimenting/new" crowd. seems everything ran very well except bluetooth. So for people who don't know what exists or their names, or how to "pimp" linux, arco seems like a 9/10 for me ! ( !! my opinion based on this review !! ). Thanks for the review :)

Gnome software ... I still don't get the point of it's existence now other than the fact that it supports flatpak and snaps . It's still almost the the same . 50:50 chance that it'll work.

BTW, nice review . I kind of like fedora and Deb based distros 😅. Gotten used to just both .😝 . Maybe I'll start trying arch with Arco when I have some time :)

if you think calamares is lame, try reborn os, it has the most sexy installer, cnchi

agreed, this distro is very bloated, while I understand Arco is intended for newbies and people wanting to learn Arch, it would be nice to see a proper released without the bloat. I find it strange it out performed Arch in gaming, I know there are no special tweaks Arco does in that respect, its all just extra packages installed so im not sure what package Arco has installed that makes gaming performance better than Arch

But arco linux is using xfce and zen was using kde

18GB???? Isn’t that like 3 Ubuntus 😂 Egee you should take a look at endeavourOS. Never tried it but some people say it’s good, it’s essentially an easier way to install arch (like manjaro, arco and whatnot... so many of them). Anyways from what I got to know, endeavour may be a better.

arco is one of those that makes a simple "arch" installation bloated with everything under the kitchen sink. and who wants installing stuff from calamares, when the progress bar does not even move or any indication if packages are being downloaded or installed in the background. you'll have to run calamares -d in terminal (or debug mode) to see anything...

If I couldn't install Arch by the Arch Way, I would probably not go with Arch at all.
