I was one of the COVID year students, and I write a story about a woman with her daughter sitting at the airport feeling extremely anxious and then seeing her husband and running to hug him. Got a solid 8 on that 👏

Our teacher also had a go at us after since we were supposed to write a story about "loneliness" but everyone just made theirs extremely personal and he got really uncomfortable reading them 💀

I wrote a story about a bureaucrat finding a severed ear on a park bench, then spiralling down a rabbit hole due to the absurdity of the situation. Grade 9, then I did one about the weather factory, where businessmen pour acid rain on protesters; Grade 7, then I did one about a child describing a room to his blind father, grade 5: go for absurd

As I said to my friend, he doesn't need to rewrite war and peace, just describe a moth buzzing around a room in insane detail and you will get far more marks

No it doesn't. It proves that good short stories turn on internal/character based conflict and resolution. But 100% agree that over ambitious plotting is a real downfall for students at GCSE.

I got grade 5 in English language had to get it remarked and a 6 in literature thanks to him in 2022.

I wrote the plot of the TV show Vikings in my mock and my exam for GCSE English Language. Got 38/40 in the mock IIRC, it got me a 6 in the real exam 😅

I wrote a story about a Spider-Man OC returning to the place his canon event took place in my mocks. All he did was look around the room, pick up the spider and then decide to fight the government for revenge. I got 38/40 for plagiarising off of ASTV and basically writing fanfiction 😭

The grade shows the student’s competency in writing characters. You don’t always have time to develop a proper plot, so it’s better to develop and character and their internal conflict than to write a bunch of hemmed-in undeveloped nonsense.
