It would have been a pain in the ass but you could have pulled the leaf pack apart and taken out leaves until the bolt was long enough to get nuts on

Pretty sure that piece of wood is increasing stress on the straps. You eliminated the capacity of the vehicle to absorb shock loads on that corner and put all the shock and stress into the straps.

Next time take n leafblade or 2 out for the u bolt to fit.... Helped me one time.

It's funny that this happens constantly to the steer axle on volvo trucks and volvo say it's not a problem, we have 50 trucks literally one axle a week comes off coz of their design.

A wheel bearing went bad on my 2005 Ford expedition, we had barely adequate tools but we beat on the cv axel for over a hour and it wouldn’t budge even a 32nd of a inch 🥵😡🤬. We ended up towing it home where I have access to a 20 ton press.
