Before copa america, Messi was ranked 5th on ballon d'or nominees because he hadn't an exceptional season in term of collective titles because he won only copa del rey, but he had in the 2020/2021 season 38 goals and 12 assists, copa del rey mvp.
But after copa america, Messi became the clear winner after Lewandowski failed with Poland to make it out of the group stage and wasn't even in the ultime team in the whole tournament but Messi won the copa america and was the best player with the greatest performance in tournament ever.

Messi won Copa America with Argentina and Copa Del Rey with Barc. He was better for both club and national and had lots of goal contribution despite not being a pure striker. Lewandowski was clearly better for the club but not much for the national side. So, Messi was better overall for 2020/21 season.
