Rare Snowy Owl Spotted in Southern California

Paparazzi in southern California? That’s pretty typical. But this crowd of photographers is getting pictures of a rare snowy owl spotted in a residential neighborhood in Cypress. The owl has been around for about a week, which is unusual considering its normal habitat is the arctic tundra. Experts are trying to figure out why it’s so far from home, and while they want to help the owl, they don’t want to interfere if it’s healthy. Inside Edition Digital has more.

As a birdwatcher, I suspect it is most likely due to the winter storm. Normally when there is a major storm like major hurricanes/cyclones or the snow storm like what we saw, many birds get pushed of course and end up outside their range.

I’ve seen a rare snowy owl flying next to imperial highway into Craig park. It was the biggest owl and the most gorgeous owl. This was back in 2020. They have been coming down here for a few. And I love them so much! :)

I live in Ontario Canada and we see them all the time in the winter. They're usually perched on the top of hydro poles or really tall pine trees in the countryside.

I had the pleasure of seeing a pair of these back in 2004. (Also in Southern California) I didn't realize it was unusual at the time. They both seemed healthy and strong, thankfully.

A large one was in Seal Beach California in 2001. I saw it when leaving my office at the Boeing plant late in the evening. The plant is near the Navy ammo depot, which serves as an unofficial wildlife refuge. The owl was huge and perched on a sign. It wasn't afraid of me and just watched me walk by.

Probably because of the severe weather that seems to be going on in this world. We'll more than likely see these odd behaviors in the future as humans destroy the earth. Please make sure this owl gets food and water to help it's survival.
