First we get snow. Endgame record broken in China. Now we get alternate universe Dan with no flannel. I can't take it.

Tenet was my last big screen watch too. Like Dan, I was in full COVID gear and when The Protagonist put on his oxygen mask I felt a sense of camaraderie 😅

The Croods surprisingly big success in a middle of a pandemic has shown why family marketed films are one of the biggest revenue drivers and a necessity to the entertainment industry, when the world is in chaos these type of films provides the best escapism that’s really needed and it keeps kids out of complete boredom.

That article about ticket prices suggested the average ticket price paid for detective Chinatown 3 was the equivalent of $7.74.... the average ticket price in the USA is what? $9-10?
So they are still working at a lower base to hit a higher bar.

It’s so strange seeing Dan not in a checkered button-up.

Maybe bring back the “butts in seats” numbers, Dan? Number of tickets sold is a better metric, IMHO.

The Croods business makes Disneys Raya next month sort of interesting. I know it's on Disney plus but Croods has also been on demand too.

Ticket pricing seems pretty flexible in China. Based on the little bit I know, price can range from RMB18 to 100 ($3 to $16). Price differs based on similar reasons as here, such as time of the day (much cheaper if you go early morning), different ticketing apps, city location (more expensive in big cities, as expected), theater types, movie format (IMAX, 3D, and something I always wanted to try, 4D)

I've always wondered why they report the amount of money made rather than the number of tickets sold.

I remember the week the Chinese Box Office closed last year Marriage Story was supposed to come out there. Gosh, Marriage Story seems so far away now.

I have family in China and have been all over the country. I've spent about a year of my life there, spread across the past 3 decades. I've seen the increase of wealth among the populace in that time. And boy, do they have disposable income now. The consumerism there is actually off putting to me, and I'm American lmao. The majority of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and can't cover a $1000 emergency expense, why would we be surprised that our single-country box office record could be broken by a wealthy country with 3x the population? Also Chinese New Year is the biggest deal all year, even bigger than Christmas here, since not everyone celebrates Christmas. Add that to the fact that people weren't traveling as much, I'm assuming normalcy like going to the theater as a collective experience is still a novelty that people want to participate in, and here we are.

Stay safe everyone. And please have some empathy for those of us in the South. Lots of southern states do not have the resources to deal with these types of weather extremes.

It'll get better here. And you'll have numbers to report hopefully by year's end. We love you Dan!

The pandemic is also fueling the China box office because of travel restrictions making people stay in the cities instead of going home to family reunions. Most businesses in the cities are closed, except movie theaters.

Even the "inflated" Chinese ticket prices ($7.74) are still cheaper than the average US ticket ($9.16), so...
The record seems legit to me.

The postive I take from all of this (film wise) is that some films I would never have heard of I am finding both streaming wise and theatres (ones that simply would not have gotten attention)

I’m with ya, Dan. I miss theaters. Haven’t been since Birds of Prey over a year ago now
