What You DON'T Know About Japan Train Platform Food Stands

If you’ve ever ridden a train in Japan, you may have noticed food stalls on the train platform many of which are standing soba shops. And to many newcomers, it may seem a bit odd to eat here, so I wanted to shed some light on this unique Japanese culture and even give you some recommendations for your next trip to Japan. The history of standing soba shops dates back to the Edo period. After the Great Fire of Meireki, which devastated over 60% of Tokyo, food stalls called YATAI became popular among the carpenters helping to rebuild the city. While there were no trains back then, the concept of accessible, fast food carried into the Meiji period. And Over time, these soba shops evolved in form and variety eventually making their way onto train platforms…and have existed ever since. Japanese now, view them as quick, ultra convenient and relatively cheap satisfying meals that they can have just before they rush off to you next destination.

My girl and i ate at a udon/soba shop on the train platform in shinagawa station. We got off the train, was going to head to the shinkansen upstairs. But we stumbled upon that shop while looking for the elevator. We decided to eat there since we were a couple of hours ahead of schedule. It was pretty much what the first shop in this video served. It was so good. I couldn't believe food in a train platform can taste so good.

Fun throwback. My son and I took the wrong train to our hotel the first time we traveled to Japan. We got off, I was nervous as wrecked we don't know where we're at. While waiting for the correct train on the platform, I felt so overwhelmed. I got culture shock suddenly looking around at the billboards. I told my son I wanna go back home:(. As soon as I turned my head around and saw this udon place and more food stalls with assorted snacks and sweets carefully wrapped in cuteness overload papers, the excitement came rushing back in. The anxiety attack disappeared in seconds. Best trip ever!

As a Japanese person, I recommend Yayoiken, which is located at Abiko Station on the JR Joban Line.
The soba noodles topped with super-large pieces of fried chicken are a local food that is famous among people who like to eat soba while standing.
Abiko Station is located in Chiba Prefecture, and is a little far from the center of Tokyo. It may be a little difficult for beginners to visit.
Also, the fact that the ticket machine only displays Japanese may be a hurdle. But I guarantee the taste.

My favorite food is the curry udon with chikuwa tempura at Nankai Soba in Namba Station, Nankai Railway, Namba, Osaka! It's a masterpiece that combines curry soup and udon broth! It's served within 30 seconds of ordering! The soup bases for soba and udon noodles are different: in Kanto (eastern Japan), the soup is soy sauce-based and salty and dry, while in Kansai (western Japan), it is kelp and bonito-based and has a strong umami flavor and is thin, so it is good to compare the two.

I’ve lived in Japan for 12 years and still never eaten on a platform. Paolo has me thinking I need to rectify that.

Gotanda was my home base during my trip. I was a bit confused at why there was a restaurant right in the middle of the platform.😂 I didn’t try it because I wasn’t sure if they were English-friendly but I’ll give it a try next time. There’s actually a very similar restaurant downstairs that I visited several times. I love the simplicity of these types of places.

I did not even realize they had this at train stations when I went 7 years ago. I was always so focused on making sure I found and got on the correct trains I never noticed this. Hopefully I can check one out if I go again in the future. I always love the videos you do with food.
