Easter Island was the first Pacific island to be registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Easter Island lies 3,700 km to the west of Chile and it is one of the most remote islands in the world. The island is most famous for its nearly 1,000 monumental statues, called Moai, which were created by the early Rapa Nui people.
The first known European visitor to Easter Island was the Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen, who arrived there in 1722. The Dutch named the island Easter Island to commemorate the day they arrived. There are no trees on Easter Island. When it rains on the island, the water rapidly drains through the porous volcanic soil, leaving the grass dry again.
Construction of the Moai statues appears to have stopped around the time of European contact in 1722. Over the next century, the Moai would fall over, either intentionally pushed over or from simple neglect. Why construction was abandoned is another mystery. It is unknown how the Rapa Nui have moved the stones without trees to anchor the soil. UNESCO world heritage site.

I've seen maybe every theory on this so far on what happened here and it's weird to me that no one has said it was likely caused by disease brought by foreign explorers
It's what happens almost every time some European makes contact with a secluded tribe and they leave to talk about the amazing civilization with tons of people just to come back and see them all dying
Maybe disease isn't what finished them off but I'm sure it has something to do with the collapse of that civilization

There are many trees on Easter Island now. Just not enough to prevent erosion. They need more.

Fun fact: Ever wondered why no moai statues are in the British Museum? They were too heavy to lift.

They stopped bc they died. Think about it. No trees, no renew of oxygen in the whole area, no food from trees, no materials to build canoes to look for other supplies... In the end, the moment they usee the last piece of resources they had, it was a sealed fate.

It all makes sense because that man landed on Easter island on Easter Sunday

I believe the deforestation was caused by rats and not entirely from people. I honestly would never think islanders would overuse or over harvest their materials just to move statues. The story we’ve all been told about the demise of Easter Island’s culture is flat-out wrong…

It should be protected as such. Not let people light it on fire.
