Dual, trial, and paucal are great other types of number in language!

Arithmetic and conversation are often at odds. One quarter of a cake is singular but 0.25 kilograms are marked plural and 25% of the population could be either.

And I don't know whether we're saying "negative (forty degrees)" or "(negative forty) degrees" because the former wouldn't violate the "more than one" rule anyway.

What about -1? Do you use singular or plural?

I own 0 (zero) cats is the same as I do not own a cat. Which says to me that zero can be either plural or singular depending on how you wish to use it. However the word cats is what is plural in that sentence zero is just a modifier.
