Hail Hydra! Hydra viridissima is commonly called green hydra due to its coloration. Because Hydras can regrow detached parts of their bodies, they are named after the hydras from Greek mythology - nine-headed hydra monsters could grow two new heads for each head that was cut off. Hydra viridissima are green due to the symbiotic green algae Chlorella which live within its body. They are no vegans though - green Hydra are strictly carnivorous and typically feed on small crustaceans, insects and worms. It has long, finger-like tentacles growing around its mouth opening and uses these tentacles to extend and reach out to prey, stinging and paralyzing its food.
