People continually miss the point about full-size vs. mid-size pickups--it is this: Full-size pickups are simply too large for some applications--tight off-road trail use, urban parking, smallish garages, etc. For people with those types of needs, a mid-size pickup is often better suited for them. Often lost in these reviews is the fact that even extremely off-road capable full-size pickups can't go where they won't fit. Probably at least 25% of the off-road 4WD trails where I live fall into that category. On those trails, my full-size pickup is useless; I have to have a second smaller 4WD for that.

I work at a Ford dealership in Massachusetts and last week I took a Ranger Lariat supercrew up to Maine (130+ mile trip). I also bought myself a 2018 Colorado Z71 extended cab back in the fall. My assessment:

The Ranger has more comfortable seats that are easier to slide in/out of, I like the torque from the EcoBoost, the FX4 package includes more skid plating than the Z71/All-Terrain package does from the factory, the B&O stereo in the Ford sounds a little better to my ears than the Bose system in the GM trucks, and the interior feels a bit more spacious thanks to its higher roof line and sloping dash design. The Colorado and Canyon are better looking to me, I prefer the n/a 3.6 V6 over the 2.3 EcoBoost I4 for longevity, the ride is much quieter, I like the bumper and tailgate setup better, and the biggest thing for me is the front end suspension/steering setup is a lot better than the Ranger's in every way, even down to the steering wheel. Overall in this case I slightly prefer the GM to the Ford, but honestly I'd be happy with either one. Also I took the front air dam off of my Colorado, didn't notice a big difference in fuel economy but it's way more confidence inspiring now in rough terrain, plus it looks better without it.

Wow, I can't believe a base 4x4 Canyon is $5k more than a base 4x4 Ranger. That is insane for GM to do that. Definitely planning on getting a midsize truck soon and looking like it's gonna be a Ranger!!

This guy is my new favorite on TFL. His narration is excellent and sounds perfectly natural. Keep up the great work!

The exhaust test is dumb if your not comparing bone stock trucks.

You might want to add lock to lock steering radius comparison in the future along with interior storage specifically under the rear seats.

I like the idea of owning a midsize for marginally better MPG than a full-size, easier to park, maneuver and still being able to pull a decent boat or snowmobiles or what have you. V8 power is awesome and great to have, but not always needed. Just different strokes for different folks is all.

I don't see the value of a paying almost full size truck price for a 1/2 size truck.

Classic tfl, comparing things that are not even close in comparison. From doing tests with different kind of tires, to asking what sounds better a stock truck exhaust or aftermarket. Classic tfl.

Paid $28, 000 for my full size truck after discounts. 2250lb payload/ 11, 250lbs towing. Only time i miss my midsize truck is when parking lots are tight fit

The All Terrain also adds Transfer case shield and Automatic locking rear differential.

Already bought me a Ranger, I'm just here to bolster my confirmation bias

I have the 2019 Lariat/FX4/tow pkg. Great truck. Before buying the Ranger I test drove a Colorado ZR2 diesel. I loved the engine, but the leather seats were uncomfortable on a short test drive. Then we went and test drove the Ranger, what we ended up buying, with no regrets.

We get it TFL, the ecoboost motors don’t sound like a v-8. Can we please move on?

Not sure why the sound matters a whole lot as far as vehicle performance.... I prefer the Ranger, more quiet, less likely to wake people if you need to leave at night, like picking someone up from the airport or something. More of a polite sound. I hate when some loud car or motorcycle blasts through the neighborhood.

This video was brought to you by Ford.

The ranger is a turbo. There is no turbo engine that sounds great. The ranger has it where it counts which is capability. If your buying because of how it sounds your buying wrong.

Let's see some comparisons of the mid-size trucks to their full-size counterparts. Price them out with same options (heated seats, sun roof, etc etc). No need to do a towing comparison... we know the answer there.
