An interesting finding! And don't pay attention to that FYROM below. Their entire country is a big Comintern mistake. They speak violently to all their neighbours, especially to us and to you. Everything will go to its place sooner or later :)

It;s a great discovery, but we should wait for the final conclusion! By the way Amfipolis was an ancient colony of the Athenians.Macedon ( which is its greek name ) was always interrelated with the other greeks!

“Macedonian Treasures” exhibition will be inaugurated at Pellas museum on Friday
Posted by newsroom in Culture Sep, 01 2014 No Comments Author: newsroom

Culture and Sports Minister Costas Tasoulas will attend the inauguration ceremony.
The “Macedonian Treasures” exhibition will be inaugurated at the Pellas Archaeological Museum in northern Greece on Friday and it is scheduled to run until September 30, 2015.

The unique exhibits recovered from royal graves in the Aiges and Archontiko necropolises include many items which are displayed for the first time in Greece, such as gold wreaths, gold masks, weapons, unique sculptures and vessels of alabaster, metal or pottery that were uncovered over 25 years of archaeological excavation at the two sites.

Some of the antiquities were loaned to major exhibitions held at Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum and at the Louvre in Paris in 2011. Now they will return to their country of origin to win the admiration of the Greek audience.

The exhibition’s aim is to present a comprehensive picture of the civilization that formed in the heart of Macedonia during the Archaic and early Classical eras, at a time of fundamental change that laid the foundations for the later Macedonian kingdoms.

The following passage, is the speech of Alexander the Great, after the battle of Chaeronea, and the victory of the Macedonians and their allies agains the Thebeans and Athenians during this Greek Civil War . This victory established the hellenic alliance of all the city states except for Sparta  against Persia, and proved that the the Macedonian State was the prevailing one amongst the other Greek states.

Please read it .

"Holy shadows of the dead, I’m not to blame for your cruel and bitter fate, but the accursed rivalry which brought sister nations and brother people, to fight one another. I do not feel happy for this victory of mine. On the contrary, I would be glad, brothers, if I had all of you standing here next to me, since we are united by the same language, the same blood and the same visions .

How many Greek legends were really true?
Alexander the not so Great
Archaeologists unearthing a burial site at Amphipolis in northern Greece have made an "extremely important find", says Greek PM Antonis Samaras.

Experts believe the tomb belonged to an important figure dating back to the last quarter of the Fourth Century BC.

A large mound complex has been unearthed at the Kasta hill site in the past two years.

Lead archaeologist Katerina Peristeri said it certainly dated from after the death of Alexander the Great.

"The land of Macedonia continues to move and surprise us, revealing from deep within its unique treasures, " Mr Samaras said while visiting the mound complex on Tuesday.

Other ancient sites have been found in the Macedonia region of northern Greece, principally the Vergina tomb of Alexander's father, Philip II, which was unearthed in 1977.

There has been widespread speculation that a prominent figure in ancient Macedonia may have been buried at Kasta hill, 600km (370 miles) north of Athens.

The burial mound is 497m (1, 600ft) long and constructed with marble imported from the nearby island of Thassos and there are suggestions it was built by the renowned architect, Dinocrates, who was a friend of Alexander's.

Archaeologists have restored the statute of a lion discovered earlier at the Amphipolis site
Ms Peristeri has in the past spoken of key historic events in the area involving some of Alexander's generals.

Alexander's widow Roxana and their son Alexander were murdered in 311BC by Cassander, who came to the fore after Alexander the Great's death in Babylon in 323BC.

A lion statue found at the site has been erected close to where it was discovered at Amphipolis, which was originally an Athenian colony but later conquered by Philip II.

Macedonia : Military Decree of Amphipolis
The “Amphipolis Lion”.
The Military Decree of Amphipolis (ca. 200 BC) is a Macedonian Greek inscription of two marble blocks, that originally contain at least three columns of text. It preserves a list of regulations governing the behaviour and discipline of the Macedonian army in camp.

“ those not bearing the weapons appropriate to them are to be fined according to the regulations: for the kotthybos, two obols, the same amount for the konos, three obols for the sarissa, the same for the makhaira, for the knemides two obols, for the aspis a drachma. In the case of hegemons (officers), double for the arms mentioned, two drachmas for the thorax, a drachma for the hemithorakion. The secretaries (grammateis) and the chief assistants (archyperetai) shall exact the penalty, after indicating the transgressors to the King (basileus) ”

Other military terms mentioned are: ephodos (inspection patrol), ekkoition (“out-of-bed”, LSJ: night-watch), stegnopoiia (building the barracks), skenopoiia (tent-making), phragmos (fencing in), diastasis, phylax (guard), hypaspists, parembole, stratopedon (camp), speirarch (commander of a speira), tetrarch, and the strategoi.

National Geographic: Queen of the Underworld Sheds New Light on Greek Tomb
Newly revealed mosaic may hold key to unlocking mystery: Who was buried in the massive mound?

The newly excavated Amphipolis tomb mosaic, seen here, depicts the figure of a woman identified as the goddess Persephone, queen of the underworld. The image might hold a clue to the contents of the tomb.

PUBLISHED OCTOBER 18, 2014
Greek archaeologists have discovered the image of a young, red-haired goddess being swept off to the underworld inside a 2, 300-year-old tomb near the ancient site of Amphipolis in northern Greece. Identified as Persephone, daughter of Zeus, the goddess portrayed on a mosaic floor provides a key new clue to what in recent months has become a much publicized mystery: Who was laid to rest in the immense, marble-walled tomb 61 miles (99 kilometers) northeast of the Greek city of Thessaloniki?

Monumental in scale and Macedonian in style, the Amphipolis tomb (also known as the Kasta tumulus) lies close to the Aegean port that Alexander the Great used for his fleet. Archaeologists have dated the tomb to the last quarter of the fourth century B.C., likely placing its construction in the fractious period following Alexander's death in 323 B.C. All this has fueled intense speculation that the tomb was built for someone close to Alexander, but clear evidence has been lacking.

Greece's Ministry of Culture and Sport announced at a news conference on Thursday that the newly discovered image of Persephone closely resembles one in a painting from the royal cemetery of Vergina, where Alexander the Great's father was buried. This discovery, noted Lena Mendoni, general secretary of the Ministry, links the Amphipolis tomb to the royal lineage of Alexander the Great. "The political symbolism is very strong, " Mendoni said.

The new find is raising hope that the tomb will add another chapter to the tumultuous history of the ancient Macedonian royal house. "Without doubt, " said archaeologist Katerina Peristeri, principal investigator of the Amphipolis tomb, "the deceased was extremely important."

The woman featured in the mosaic is shown with fiery red hair and dressed in a white robe. Archaeologists believe the mosaic shows the abduction of Persephone by Pluto.

Carried Off to the Land of the Dead

Peristeri and her colleagues discovered the Persephone mosaic as they cleared the floor of one of the tomb's inner chambers. Extending over some 145 square feet, the finely executed artwork depicts the Greek myth of the abduction of Persephone. According to the ancient story, Hades, the god of the underworld, spied Persephone, the daughter of Zeus and the harvest goddess, working in a field, and decided to make her his wife. So he captured her and took her to the underworld, where she became his queen.

The mosaic portrays Hades as a bearded charioteer carrying off the curly-haired Persephone, who looks back wistfully toward her home. Running in front of the chariot is a third figure, the messenger god Hermes, who wears a scarlet cloak and hat and a pair of winged sandals as he leads the way to the underworld.

Peristeri was unwilling to speculate on the identity of the tomb's owner based on this new evidence. But Ian Worthington, a classical scholar at the University of Missouri in Columbia, thinks the excavators could be looking at "a female occupant of the tomb, because the mosaic shows a female being led to the underworld." If this proves to be the case, Worthington added, the tomb might hold the remains of Roxane, Alexander the Great's wife, or Olympias, his mother. Both women were put to death by one of Alexander's generals, Cassander, as he secured the throne of ancient Macedonia.

Surviving classical texts record that Cassander put Roxane and her young son to death at Amphipolis in 310 B.C., so it's very possible, said Worthington, that she could lie in the Amphipolis tomb.

But other evidence points strongly toward Olympias. Alexander intended to make his mother a goddess, like the female deity in Hades' chariot. Moreover, Olympias continued to hold considerable political power even after Alexander's death. Although she was murdered by Cassander and his allies, "I think she still could have been honored by such a tomb, " said Philip Freeman, a professor of classics at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

Only time, and further excavation, will tell.

The FYROMian language belongs to the eastern sub-branch of the South Slavic branch of the Slavic languages of the Indo-European family of languages, - AND HENCE IS NOT DESCENDED FROM ANCIENT MACEDONIAN. - Its closest relative is Bulgarian, with which it has a high degree of mutual intelligibility. - Prior to their codification in 1945, FYROMian dialects were for the most part classified as Bulgarian and some linguists consider them still as such, but this view is politically controversial.

After the death of Alexander the Great, the era between 323 b.c. and 30 b.c, is named as HELLENISTIC.

This explains VERY WELL IF THE MACEDONIANS WERE HELLENES OR NOT.

Macedonians are Hellenes.Hellenes or Greek are two different names for the same nation.

On the same way the Croatians call their country "Hrvatska" and the Hungarians call themselves "Magyars".

Asking if Alexander the Great was "Macedonian or Greek" is WRONG. It is like asking if Milanese are Italians, Bavarians are Germans, Texans are Americans,

The RIGHT question is "Greek or Slav" . And the slavic populations were not even in the Balkans then. They came almost 800 years later .
