Corrour Railway Station and Restaurant, Rannoch Moor

Показать описание
The most remote railway station in the British Isles. No public road access but a train every few hours and the Caledonian Sleeper stops here. An award winning restaurant was located here but closed in June 2015 after a difference in opinion with the owners of the Corrour Estate. The old station house now provides accommodation and the restaurant has re-opened and caters for all comers.

I walked from Rannoch station to Corrour station across Rannoch Moor many years ago. One of my camera lenses fell out of my gadget bag on to the heather on the moor. I had no idea I'd lost it until I couldn't find it in my bag. It's probably still there! I'd to track down the station master at Corrour to try to buy a ticket home. He lived in a wee cottage beside the station. I knocked on his door and two Border Collies flew out at me accompanied by a bearded character who turned out to be the station master. I got my ticket. I travelled up there in the 80s. Life travelled at a slower pace up there then. The trains would frequently be hours late but nobody seemed to care. An engine once broke down in the middle of Rannoch Moor. The driver and his mate walked up the line to find the nearest phone. They were gone for hours. Another engine was summoned from Fort William. We all sat out on the heather enjoying the sun. They still used the tokens then to make sure only one train was on the line at a time. It was a simple and very effective system.
