My dad just passed two days ago and I am playing this video in his room. Can't find any word but I love and thank him. He is now in peace forever. See you soon again, dad. Love you.

After Glenn passed away, at his funeral mass, many people started crying because they heard a voice singing the main Aria theme to the Goldberg variations. It was Glenn.

Impresiona la manera de interpretar Glenn Gould a Bach. Sin duda el mejor. Per cortar algo tan magistral para poner un anuncio comercial es un crimen de lesa humanidad.

I know the sound engineers did their very best to remove it, but hearing him hum and sing the music as he plays makes me feel as if I'm in that room with him. Gives me shivers. Wonderful.

Rest In Peace Maestro Glenn Gould! There was never again a master like you translating this genius Bach- composition.

A rollercoaster ride between heaven and hell...the Goldberg Variations by Glenn Gould, followed by a Verizon commercial, followed by more Glenn Gould, followed by an Air BnB commercial, and so on.... It's a crime such a treasure of humanity is bookended by shameless avarice.

Why is the video half a second behind the sound? Please synch the video! The music is worth it (and why has nobody recognized this yet?)! Thank you for uploading this fantastic recording! : )

There is no separation at all between the piano, the player, and the music. A mystical perfect unity has been effortlessly created.
The piano could be Gould,
Gould could be the piano.
And the music obliterates both Gould and the piano.

Edit : thank you for the likes. I was first introduced to this sublime piece over thirty years ago. And, I always come back to it at intervals. And every single time I find something new and amazing in it.
All the best,
Noel

Glenn Gould was a night owl. He used to travel to Vancouver and in those late evening hours call up Bob Kerr from CBC Radio - Off The Record - fame and together they would have a delightful chat together about music, recordings and what each was doing. How I would loved to being a fly on the wall and listened in to those conversations. Gould was to die on October 04, 1982 and then we lost Bob Kerr on April 08, 2003.

He is the genius of Bach and his insaturable desire to rework the Goldberg Variations from the 1955 first recording and add 12 minutes to the recording in 1981. It has become the standard by which all performances are measured.

I never tire of listening to this recording and the depth of beauty portrayed in it.

I first heard this recording in 1981, and like countless other reviewers here, was overwhelmed by the tonal beauty, clarity of melody and counterpoint that make Mr. Gould’s interpretation matchless. I’ve heard many other fine pianists, both live and on recordings play the same piece, but nothing that I have ever experienced surpasses the grandeur and tenderness that makes this interpretation so special. I grant everyone is entitled to their “favorite, ” but for me, there is no other performance of this extraordinary work that equals this one. And now, to be able to see it is a miracle. Someone on You Tube claimed Mr. Gould could not play this piece through without interruption due to his suffering from dystonia induced by his unique low seating arrangement. Well, if that’s the case, the editing needed to “stitch” this performance together is extraordinary in its own right! Finally, like other commentators, I find this musical moment to be one of the most emotionally powerful I have ever encountered- you have to be devoid of a heart not to weep with joy hearing this masterpiece played by someone who had a special connection with its composer. i’d be truly honored if someone plays this recording in recognition of my own passing.
