Shorter than Wagner’s “Reingold” and the music is much better. What an opening line! My main instrument is guitar but taught piano for thirty years only because when I got my two degrees, it was the only gig I could find although I eventually did get a band director gig….while also doing musical director gigs at night….and this lecture IMO is just as good if not better than the Peter Williams book on the Goldbergs. I’ve watched it several times just to make sure I’ve absorbed absolutely every detail. Previously I had already listened to the Robert Greenberg lectures on the Goldbergs but this lecture fills in all the missing details plus it helps to also have the score in hand while listening/seeing. Also whoever produced this video did a great job with both audio and video.

Fascinating, esp the extent to what a musical intellectual Bach was in equal part to his Lutherian God and the classical revival of symmetry of the time. Agree totally about the democracy of parts; quite hard for our musical ear to erase the dominance of the 19th c melody with supportive accomp. It's the antithesis of Bach's understanding of music and of God! Love the references to other composers, Louis 14th etc but especially the farcical ref to German Nursery rhymes and drinking songs. What a genius! After the g minor " black pearl", don't you think good souls are fluttering up to Heaven? Btw, imo Rowan Atkinson has definitely been using Schiff for research purposes. I must say I prefer Bach's sense of humour than Beethoven's. Those endless sforzandii😮

His playing of the goldberg variations is beautiful. But so is his mexican food joke with scarlatti.

10:46 Assuming young performers play music mechanically is biased. Music requires emotion and interpretation, and many young musicians from China and Korea perform with depth, connecting deeply with audiences.

Suggesting they play without understanding underestimates their talent and dedication. Modern music education is advanced worldwide, and age doesn’t limit musical understanding.

Andras Schiff, you’d likely feel the same discomfort if I criticized your English pronunciation.

Is so sad that we still need to hear that false anecdote, instead of understanding Bach master plan for the clavier übung series. And even sad to still refer to them by another player name that Bach never intended to honor. Is like we calling Mozart Requiem, the Walsegg Requiem

Schiff unfortunately likes to be controversial by making brittle personally biased statements without true research. If there are 10 year old Asian pianists playing this piece, which is quite possible, he has no real knowledge that not one of the wunderkinder is thoroughly schooled in the architecture and meaning of the piece.

I wish Shiff said more knowledge

Even he said a lot
