So lovely to be able to learn about the Maori petroglyphs from a local perspective. I saw the petroglyphs a few months back on a website and instantly recognised the faces as 'Tiki' our ancestor Maui-Tikitiki-a-Taranga after whom the movie "Maui" is about. Just about every island in the Pacific Ocean knows about Maui. Wikipedia gives a brief summary on him. I am the 53rd generation from him and there are many Pasifika Peoples who also claim descent.

We were originally from Hawaiki (or Mu) which was in the central Pacific Ocean and was one of the lands that sank beneath the seas. We managed to settle and populate the Pacific Islands - Cook Islands, Papeete (Tahiti), etc. Later, as populations grew we began exploring the Pacific for new territories. The people of Hawai'i, Rarotonga, Aotearoa (New Zealand), etc.
