The Missing iPhone 9 - What Happened?

In 2017, Apple would release the iPhone 8 & 8 Plus alongside the iPhone X- the 8 being a refinement of the iPhone 7, and the iPhone X being a massive leap in design- but what happened to the iPhone 9?

I'd like to imagine a reality where the iPhone 9 met Windows 9 and they all lived happily ever after.

...But assuming this isn't the case, what's your personal theory? What happened to the iPhone 9, and why'd Apple decide to skip it? Very curious to hear opinions on this one!

I heard that Samsung went from S10 to S20 because it was 2020 and they wanted the releases to coincide with the year, ie 2020 =S20, 2021 =S21, 2022 =S22, etc.

Never really thought about it, as Apple simply wanted to make their fully redesigned iPhone on the 10th year anniversary have a milestone name, so iPhone X made way more sense than iPhone 9 or a third iPhone 8 (i.e 8s, 8 Pro, or similar). Makes enough sense to me.

But if we were going to ask where the iPhone 9 went, I'd say the XR or the second iPhone SE fits the bill.

The XR is the iPhone 9 in my book. Granted, we may never know the true reasoning behind the jump from the 8 to the X, but in this case I think we can assume (to a reasonable degree) that the XR was the iPhone 9.

I'd say iPhone SE 2020 is the missing iPhone 9, and SE 2022 is the iPhone 10 (not X).

It's weird but so is Apple naming convention, iPad 4 was high end in 2012, but 5 years later they released the iPad 5 which was the cheapest iPad.
Same could be said about iPad Air 2 and Air 3, high end to mid range.

Kinda similar to the iPhone situation in my books.

It’s pretty crazy just how little has changed over the years with the iPhone other than the camera in the last five years or so. Apple really should consider some sort of UI refresh after all of these years. They’re still going with the same parallax UI from iOS 7 at this point.

Or, the iPhone X was released in 2017 with only one size because they already had issues securing enough OLED Panels and Face ID sensors. It was a great way to start shipping a better iPhone despite these constraints.

The reason 9 was skipped was because seven ate nine

What if the real iPhone 9 was the friends we made along the way?

Uh I think Samsung just matched the model names with the year. 2020 - S20, 2021 - S21 etc. Sounds good to me. Also wasn’t the SE 2 rumoured to be called iPhone 9 at first initially?

Apple should’ve called the iPhone 8 the iPhone 7 S, because that is what it really was. The iPhone 8 didn’t add anything new externally except for a glass back that’s it.

Because 9 for some reason is a cursed number. Notice, if you pay attention to it, how leaks are saying even Nintendo is going straight to Mario Kart X or 10 from 8 deluxe. Weird trend

12:49 Also from Samsung on why the Note series went from 5 to 7 and skipping the 6, is so the Galaxy Note lineup won’t appear as a generation behind from the flagship Galaxy S series.

The reason is simple. The number 9 is considered bad luck in Japan. It holds a superstition the way 9 is pronounced it shares “ku” and that’s can be associated with agony

I always thought they skipped the nine because the 10 was so advanced that they wanted people to know it was so advanced that it even leaked over number nine.

The rush production of iPhone X was the reason there were so many iPhone 8 chasis laying around and ended up being the iPhone SE 2 and 3
