The part they couldn't trademark was Highlander.

Because it was a reference to the movie.

Ala "there can be only one"

Been playing EDH since 2010 and it's honestly the best format I've ever played, although I miss being able to tuck a commander. Also the banned as commander list was great, I miss that

Commander is honestly the one thing wizards isn’t messing up. I know you don’t like multiplayer, but I think you’d like the social game. You can also take weed breaks in between turns.

Enjoyed the history lesson! I didn’t know much about the early days of the format. Do you have any videos with the concept behind the king cube?

Commander is my jam!! Mainly because cheap cards can be good, and ya only need one copy to play one!! Good shit comes from Alaska. I find it particularly awesome that it was formed partly out of a desire to break from the norm and enjoy the actual beauty of the cards.

Highlander is a movie. When they added Highlander to MTGO, they changed the name to Singleton to avoid lawsuit

I feel like in order to make a decent edh deck, you probably need to have an extensive card library. I just got back in during Amonket and don’t have that many good individual cards

Commander is just as fun 1v1 as it is as a brawl. Especially if you only have a couple of friends you routinely play with, because of the singleton rule. You can play 10 games against the same person and see completely nee cards each game. With a normal 60 card deck you'll see every card within it in like 2 games. Shit gets boring super fast.

First of all, thank you Mike. I am an old school EDH player (as my first and best EDH deck is Nicol Bolas) and I love the history. Bit I want to correct one thing you said. I believe they loosened up the mana ruke, due to being able to steal other creatures and such. You can now tap for any mana available to you. For instance if you have a Chromatic Lantern (EDH staple), it can be used for any mana. Bit you still cannot add forests, per se, if you don't have a Green Commander. I hope that makes sense.

I will make you a deal Boss Monster... I will play Cube with you if you play EDH with me. I'll get ya hooked...

I believe rules have recently changed regarding producing mana of colors outside your Commanders identity, in order to allow for activation of opponents' cards that may be under your control. I could be wrong.

I liked commander before Wizards tampered with it with premade cards like Breya and Edgar Markov that needed to be banned in multiplayer even. Every week at my LGS I have to play my Skithyrix deck to hose them and make them stop coming to our store and let the younger and/or less money savvy players have a chance. Feelsbadman when I gotta crap out a super comp deck every week for my friends when I want to play my craptier aggro slivers or Gaddock Teeg derp deck....

Incoming question from someone who has never payed Commander. How do Wastes and "<>" mana work in Commander?

Since we're on the subject of elder dragon Highlander....what gets higher than a bunch of Christian rockers singing about getting higher?

I disagree with your latter part of how EDH became a powerhouse format.

What made EDH a powerhouse has nothing to do with the Judges. The Judging crowd may have laid down the foundation, but it has to do more with Tom of MTG Cast and the Legacy Crowd after 2008. Without either EDH would not be where it is now. Tom would promote and talk about the format whenever he could (when he was still active). Legacy Players would play EDH between Legacy sessions. At the time Legacy was on campaign to win hearts and minds in opposition to Wizards stance on ramming the Pro Tour down everyone's throats. So it was only natural for Tom to open the EDH front to show that there was more to the game than just Pro Tour formats.

Once everyone was educated about what was Legacy did the rest of chips fall into place. Without Legacy; EDH wouldn't have expanded beyond their reservation, Extended would still be supported, Modern wouldn't exist and there would be no discussion of Pauper.

"I ain't no goddamned sonofabitch- you better think about it baby" - my YouTube is being weird so I needed to throw down random Misfits lyrics to see if my comment appears. Is Unsleeved Media a goner?
