Coast Guard Boot Camp Series: General Orders, Ranks, Required Knowledge

Is it necessary to memorize required knowledge before shipping to Cape May? I share some thoughts on how important it is to plan ahead.

I have 5 months before basic, so I'm reading my helmsman a little everyday just so I can have all that knowledge be instinctual and not have to be learning that stuff on top of everything else. Maybe it's fruitless, but I really want to try my best to stay in my forming company and I feel like that should help.

I ship out December 19th 2023, super nervous about bootcamp but the helmsmen seems like the most informative resource i have for knowledge until i get there.

Physically i feel like i fall flat even though i worked out everyday (especially push ups), so im taking into consideration what that means for stressing out physically and mentally. I just hope i have enough in me to complete bootcamp and earn my place in the force

Learn your shoulder boards and sleeve insignias. They're not complicated when you realize the pattern of them, but they will ask you about those in the galley. Learn everything you can from the helmsman

I’m 41 and beginning the enlistment process with the recent age limit increase. I’m not in or out of shape necessarily but I’m curious how you think an old timer will handle boot camp?

I ship out Monday 25 Apr 2023. I'm a part of their new age requirements being relaxed (I'm 40 lol)

Once upon a time memorizing the 11 general orders was the first thing we had to memorize because everything you did was based on them and learning to follow directions to the letter and not thinking for yourself along with working together and supporting each other was the main theme. It shouldn't take weeks to learn how to sand at attention, stand in chow line and march. But I guess people and times are different that the early 70's.

The cc will randomly stop you and ask you lol. Mine was general order #5. Burn them into your brain.
