The Purple ESR Meter testing capacitors

The Purple ESR Meter for testing capacitors. ESR stands for Equivalent Series Resistance. This meter not only shows the ESR, but also the capacitor value. Very nice to find bad caps and to test new ones BEFORE you install them!

We have these at the lab. We lovingly call them "Barneys" because they are purple and loveable. I also agree the clips are clunky, but it's a great little ESR meter.

From my experience, a cap under 2 ohms is probably doing its job okay in most situations. But I always replace low voltage units with an ESR over 2 ohms.

It's under $100 and well worth it if you do frequent repair like I do. If you ever want to know if a capacitor is good or bad, this will let you know. The best part is that it can test capacitors 'In-Circuit' (on the PCB) saving you so much time.

YES - I like Barney, sound better than my Purple meter. But yes. I love this one and plan to sell my blue one someday. Thank you for the comments!

I use my oscilloscope to test bad capacitors. you can actually see how bad a capacitor is on the screen! I find it more accurate than a capacitance meter, A capacitance meter will only tell you what is "thinks" the capacitance is of the capacitor under test...the oscilloscope will let you see how bad the capacitor is...it isnt testing the capacitance as such...its testing the ESR of the capacitor which is much more informative in my opinion, As capacitance diminishes...ESR increases over time, And in my opinion ESR is a better indication of a bad capacitor than one with a lower/higher capacitance than marked on the capacitor,

I really don't pay much attention to those charts, I think you have to test some good caps and find out what they will read on the meter you have.
