Hello Socratica Friends! We're here to help you be a Great Student.
In this episode, we learn about the best way to use FLASH CARDS.

Flash cards are a great tool to use anytime you need to memorize facts, fast. They're great for drilling vocabulary terms, learning dates in history...so many uses. The best thing about flash cards is that they help you figure out what you know, and what you don’t know. And although this may be uncomfortable, the best way to master a subject is to focus on what you DON’T know!

In this video, we'll show you how we use flash cards, using an important technique known as "spaced repetition." Basically, don't try to cram in all your studying in one go! Make sure you break it up over a couple of days at least, with breaks in between. Try using flashcards following the Pomodoro method! Two fantastic techniques working together to help you be a Great Student.

We recommend making flashcards the old fashioned way - with pen and paper, but if you'd like to use an app on your phone, we like Anki. Do you have a different method of studying with flash cards? Let us know what are your favourite study tips in the comments!

Summary:
- Spaced repetition method (aka pomodoro): Study in 20 min intervals with a 5 min break in between. One of the most effective study methods.
- Can use flashcards apps like anki that use spaced repetition if its more convenient for you. But use physical flashcards when you can.
- Cut flashcards in half. Full size is not necessary,
- Color coat them to separate the categories. categories like subjects, or each chapter, etc. Colored the sides with a marker if you only have white ones.
- One card per term. Word on one side. Brief definition in your own words simplified on the other. Check with friend to make sure your definition is not oversimplified.
- Go thru them once looking at the definition side. Try to guess the word by saying it out loud before turning the card.
- Separate cards in 2 piles - 'know' and 'don't know.' Be honest with yourself - don't put the card in the Know pile if you don't 100% know.
- Take a break in between (remember spaced repetition)
- Come back and shuffle the cards in the don't know pile and go thru them again. After another 5 min break...go thru the 'don't know's again. This time there should be very few cards in that pile.
- What to do about the last "don't know" cards - try reading both sides out loud. Try writing a sentence using that word. Try reading your notes and textbook.
- Wait a few days and go thru all the cards again starting from the term side this time. Remember to shuffle the cards first in case you just memorized the order.
- there are new don't know cards. read out loud and follow up with cards that. you missed. read out loud and write a sentence. Have a friend test you. It's easy to say 'Oh I knew that' but in a test, you need to recall the material cold. Make sure you really know your stuff. Repeat steps when necessary.

Great stuff -- Thanks! I'll use them starting today!

Thank you for this video from an old gezzzer in London that is going back to study in my 60+ year.. Not knowing where to start! This helps me know where to start in simple terms.

yes. this is really effective. Ive been using this strategy since highshool and for the very first time I got the highest score in our first grading examination. Now that I enrolled again for my second course, I am still using this. You need to have more patience in writing it down on your flashcards. I tell you. its really effective.

I've been using flash cards for 3 years and that's my advice: a card don't have to be definition and term. I often prepare 2 sided questions which are prepared to include answers to the other side. So that I see different questions referring to same topic. Lastly, your video, especially the coloring part is great. I should try coloring perhaps.

I've found this video extremely useful, I am struggling to study English, I hope with the help of my flesh cards I can remember new words in order to expand my vocabulary. Thanks so much.

🍄 Two tips I have learned- 1- the cards are easier and more natural to ‘flip’ if the card is flipped bottom to top rather than left to right, which is achieved by writing the other side ‘upside down’. 2-Instead of neatly writing all of the words the same, I sometimes try to write things in an unusual way to help me remember better. For example, if I’m writing bed…I might write the letters to look like a BeD-which will hopefully stand out more in my mind.

When I was doing an evening degree course on Modern Chinese
I had a one and a half hour journey by coach
to the college
and being on a coach was not conducive to writing and reading wasn't the easiest thing
so I used to drill flashcards of vocabulary.
Luckily I have a "visual memory" and so it was very suitable for the following pairs of knowledge:
character(s) and sound
sound and English meaning
character(s) and English meaning

Interestingly as there are three elements to Chinese character learning:
shape of character, sound associated and English meaning
flashcards being binary in nature (two sides of card only)
this sometimes caused problems but ...
you just have to brute force it sometimes.

The Pimsleur Language courses use spaced repetition to effortlessly move new learnings from short term memory over to long term memory. It works!

Very helpful video. One of my school teacher once said about this type of cards. So it's an old yet effective method to learn something especially vocabbulary, definitions, terms etc.

Writing out carefully what to remember, and how to remember it (hints, short cuts, relationships etc) is a bomb way to 'inbrain' quickly.
