R.i.p. Jon Lord. His playing of the Hammond organ was magical.

Lex was right, again. It has been said that the song is a Vietnam protest song, and I always believed it was meant to depict a soldier returning home with PTSD. Ian Gillan is one of rock's most skilled vocalists and starred in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar in 1970. Amazingly talented band. 'Lazy' is a great blues rock number. ✌

One of the most amazing or should I say iconic hard rock ballads of all time. These vocals of Ian Gillan!

Sure if you had seen the most version of this song, live 1970, you would have enjoyed the high notes of the singer because we can see the work, passion and talent behind it. It's a very high note and he does it alone. Actually stopped doing this song at some point because it could damage his voice.

Ian Gillan, probably one of the greatest vocalists of all time. You should check out the live Made In Japan version of this tune. It changes things up, while still maintaining what make this so great.

Deep Purple is my all time favourite band. Purple is best served live 🤘🎸🎸

You have to listen to the live version. It is infinitely better and sounds different. Its also one of the best live performances of all time.

Live version is great but this studio version off the "Deep Purple in Rock" Album is the greatest rock song of all time off the greatest hard rock album of all time. Thought so 50 yrs ago and nothing's changed.

This lineup of Deep Purple was not into drugs. They played too well to be doing that. They also had at least one song from the In Rock album (same as for "Child in Time") called "Into the Fire, " which was an anti-drug song. The drug problems didn't start until after Glen Hughes joined (cocaine) and later Tommy Bolin (heroin). After a hiatus, the "Child in Time" lineup reformed and again, no drugs. Booze, yes, but they had that under control.

During the 80s I became a big Deep Purple fan. In the mid-90s I got to see them for the first time. It was in a small venue in Toronto with about 100 people. I was standing less than 20ft from the stage with Ian Gillan, Ian Paice, Steve Morse, Roger Glover and Jon Lord right there in front of me. RIP Jon Lord. I saw them 2 more times in the next 10 years in big stadiums including one show where they headlined with Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Child in Time is one of my favs from them and to hear them play it live was amazing.

Technology is nothing without talent. If you watch the live version you will see the technology is minimal. The music is being created right in front of your eyes. It's all about the incredible talent of most unique artists of all times. Love your reactions! Thanks and God Bless!

If you want a couple of catchy uptempo bangers from Deep Purple, listen to "Space Truckin'" and "Woman From Tokyo". Another great song is "Lazy"

The live version is a must! It’s a quicker way to catch the vibe. One of the greatests songs made, especially when considering that it’s from 1970.

This was a Vietnam War protest song, and one of the best rock songs ever. I first remember hearing this on a late night college radio station and thought "wtf, who is this band?" All members are top tier musicians, and their album "Machine Head" is probably their most well known, lots of bangers on there (especially "Highway Star"), and then they've had numerous member changes over the years. Drummer Ian Paice has a Youtube channel that's pretty cool to watch.

There was Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Those three British hard rock bands took on the world and won. They spawned thousands of other bands and changed music. Proud to be British.

The 1970 live version is so much more intense, and feels like a more complete song. Also, Perfect Strangers is a great song by Deep Purple.

Deep Purple was HUGE in Russia since it vibed with their disaster in Afganistan parallel to Vietnam for the US. They were still touring there 10 years ago.

The definitive version is one they did as a TV performance in some European broadcast. You can see them all their finery and glory. ALL HAIL RITCHIE BLACKMORE!!!

The screaming is essential to the theme of the song, , , which is WAR and the madness of WAR! The vocal range of Ian Gillan is amazing!
