After pardoning turkeys at the White House on Monday morning, President Joe Biden joined first lady Jill Biden for a trip to New York to continue an early celebration of Thanksgiving.
The first couple delivered remarks and served food at a "Friendsgiving" event with service members and their families at the U.S. Coast Guard Sector New York in Staten Island as part of the first lady's Joining Forces initiative to support military families.
"We have one sacred obligation... to care for those we send into harm's way," the president said during brief remarks prior to dishing out food.
U.S. President Joe Biden pardons the National Thanksgiving Turkey in a ceremony on the South Lawn.
President Joe Biden is pardoning two turkeys at the White House for the 77th anniversary of the National Thanksgiving Turkey presentation. Biden will pardon Peach and Blossom, both turkeys from Minnesota, as part of a pre-Thanksgiving tradition that goes back to President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War.
The first pardon of a turkey, ahead of the holiday for which the bird is the traditional main dish, was conducted by President George H.W. Bush after his predecessor, President Ronald Reagan, became the first to use the term “pardon” in the ceremony in 1987.
After Biden participates in the ceremony at the White House, he will fly to New York City to participate in a Friendsgiving event Monday evening.
