In this video, we'll explain the kenosis of Christ as outlined in Philippians 2:5-8. Dive deep into this theological concept with us!

Welcome to our Theology 101 Bible study on the Kenosis of Christ, derived from the Greek term "kenoo," meaning "to empty," as described in Philippians 2:6-7. In this session, we'll delve into the profound mystery of how Jesus, though in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped but emptied himself by taking the form of a servant and being born in the likeness of men.

What is the kenosis of Christ? Of what did Jesus empty himself? We will look at Philippians 2:7 and see what it means that "Jesus emptied himself." Did Jesus empty himself of his divinity? Did Jesus empty himself of his divine attributes? We'll take a look at Phil. 2:7 and compare it with other parts of the Bible to get a better understanding.

Key Passage:
Philippians 2:6-7
"who, though he was in the form of God,
did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
but emptied himself,
by taking the form of a servant,
being born in the likeness of men."

Background – Some of the Theories:

Kenotic Theologians (19th Century): Suggest that Jesus emptied himself of divine attributes. This theory overlooks instances where Jesus exhibited divine attributes such as:
Omniscience: John 2:24-25
Omnipresence: John 1:48
Omnipotence: Luke 8:22-25
Ceased to be God: This is clearly not the case as we see consistent evidence of Jesus' divine nature.

Of What Did Christ Empty Himself?

His Glory or the "Insignia of Majesty" (John 17:5): This was a temporary emptying.

Unlimited Use of Divine Attributes for His Own Benefit:
Omnipresence: Jesus had to travel from one place to another.
Omniscience: Mark 13:32
Omnipotence: John 4:7

His "Equality" with the Father: This was a permanent change. Jesus gave up functional equality with the Father to save us (Phil. 2:6; Matt. 20:28; 1 Cor. 15:28).

His Non-Corporeal Existence: Permanently assumed a human form (Hebrews 10:5; Luke 24:36-43; Acts 1:11).

Join us as we explore these profound aspects of Christ's humility and sacrifice, deepening our understanding of His incarnation and its implications for our faith.
