My teenage son was talking about how funny it would be if the LPL was caught in one of the Jigsaw movies. He was laughing about scenarios where he was out of the trap in under a minute and explained to his fellow prisoner as he went along.

Then he imagined the LPL locking himself back into the death trap saying: "And just to prove that wasn't a fluke ..."

That counter mechanism’s (and it’s method of function is) awfully cool

It's finally happened. A lock from my childhood is featured by LPL and called vintage.

I'm officially old now, you may bow. 😂

LPL even checks whether the counter counting is just a fluke, a true professional!

The counter could probably also be used as a means to detect if the lock had been opened while you were away. Providing some sort of security

All these years later, it still works. That's workmanship!

Walking through the streets as LPL must be so difficult: All the car doors, front doors, garage doors and bicycle locks opening up voluntarily as he passes by. Especially the fire hydrants must be a real pain in the butt.

I think the vintage locks are my favorite. I remember one you showed that punched a piece of paper to audit who opened the lock. It's fascinating the ways they came up with tracking these sorts of things before computers

Well, it took him 8 sec to unlock it, so I guess that makes it more secure than a lot of modern locks that he opens in a few seconds.

Think of how many gumball machines he could unlock

LPL has helped me in a lot of ways as a diesel mechanic that can pick simple locks. Sometimes other mechanics forget their toolbox key and would have an hour round trip to go get it but I can get it open. If a driver is locked out of his truck I can go there and use basic skills to get it open. Someday LPL, SOMEDAY I'll pay you back.

This reminds me of the good old days when I used to travel from Ottawa, Canada to Montreal each morning by train, as a consultant. Before returning to Ottawa in the evening I locked the company laptop and all my papers and stuff in one of these lockers at the train station to be picked up the next morning. Very handy indeed. Then I enjoyed a nice supper on the train on the way back to Ottawa. Nothing beats traveling light. Ahh.. the good old days :-)

Man, the solid build, mechanics and clicks clacks of these older mechanisms still looks miles away better than the plastic crap filled with electronics you see these days... it's so satisfying to see how these things work, even if they weren't all that secure.

Mechanisms that old usually have an interesting smell, too. I once opened a clock that had been in our house in Manchester in the 1940s and 50s, and the smell of soot took me right back to when I was 3 years old.

I use to see these types of locks at a lot of Greyhound Bud Stations back in the day. These days Greyhound uses digital key code locks instead of a key locking systems. Which if you forget to grab you items in a certain time frame, the bus station will remove the items and now you need to pay an additional fee to get them back.
