Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺) in Kyoto(京都) is one of Japan(日本)’s most celebrated temples, known for its stunning wooden stage that juts out from the main hall, offering panoramic views of the city and surrounding mountains. The temple's name, which means "Pure Water Temple," is derived from the Otowa Waterfall that runs through the complex. Visitors often drink from its streams, which are said to grant health, longevity, and success in studies. The temple is particularly breathtaking during the spring cherry blossom season and autumn when the maple trees around the temple change color.

Just a short walk from Kiyomizu-dera, you'll find the historic Ninenzaka (二年坂) and Sannenzaka (三年坂) slopes, which are two of Kyoto's best-preserved districts. These gently sloping streets are lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, many of which have been converted into charming shops, teahouses, and restaurants. The narrow lanes, often bustling with visitors dressed in kimonos, evoke a sense of stepping back in time to Kyoto’s rich past. The area is particularly picturesque and provides countless opportunities for photography, especially with the Yasaka Pagoda (八坂塔) often visible in the background.

Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka are also steeped in legend. It's said that if you trip and fall while walking down Sannenzaka, you might experience misfortune, particularly related to your health. This adds an element of superstition to the experience, encouraging visitors to tread carefully as they explore.

The area around Kiyomizu-dera and the Ninenzaka-Sannenzaka slopes is also a gateway to other important cultural sites in Kyoto, including the Gion (祇園) district, known for its traditional entertainment, and Yasaka Shrine (八坂神社), which hosts the famous Gion Matsuri festival each July. Exploring this area provides a comprehensive experience of Kyoto’s blend of natural beauty, history, and culture. Whether you're a first-time visitor or returning to discover more, Kiyomizu-dera and the surrounding streets of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka offer a unique and unforgettable glimpse into the heart of Japan’s ancient capital.

Japan received a lot of influence from ancient China. Japan imitated Chinese architecture and art during the Tang Dynasty. Japan uses Chinese characters.

Living in Japan was great in the pandemic. We went to all the best places and there were no foreign tourists, Quiet, serene, as it was before the tourist fad. Now it sucks.
