I've been wanting to do this comparison for a long time and finally got ahold of a Beta58a (for science.) I think it sounds brighter and more detailed- what do you think?

Beta 58a cuts thru better, keeping the vocals upfront in the mix. I sold my SM58 and traded-up to the Beta 58a - never looked back. Nice job. Fair & detailed comparison.

The difference is negligible . I still prefer the tried and true SM58 . For my voice which verges on almost baritone from tenor, I still prefer the SM58 Everything can be adjusted at the board . As far as price, I can get 3 SM58's and have lunch at the cafe nextdoor for what 2 Beta 58's cost .

Thank you for your video! Interesting... this is the second comparison in which I noticed, that Shure Beta 58A actually does a better job in rejecting handling noises, compared to the Shure SM58. Now i wonder, how the Shure SM58 would fare against the Behringer BA85A. That one is not great for handling noise either. Lets see, if I can find a comparison between those two somewhere.

I generally find the Beta to be too trebley. The original 58 is warmer to my ears and I lose a lot of that with the Beta.

The sm58 sound a bit muffle on the low bass frequencies and the beta is more clear sound . I do like the beta because u can also add the more lows and it will be more clearer

I have both mics and to be honest I was disappointed with the beta 58 to Me sounds more like a condenser sm58 but I prefer the Sm58

Annoyingly somebody stole my blue ring off my beta 58 mic when i set mines up in the studio... and Shure charge stupid amounts to replace that...

So - I'm just looking for a mic that works well in a live situation (as in - on stage with lots of noise).
I find lots of reviews in studios / home studios, but none of them address how these mics perform when being hand-held by a person running around on stage while a band is producing very loud music.. 🙂

Upgraded from a Sm58 to a beta 58 when I decided to get a wireless system. Best move ever!

Here is the biggest problem I've come across with most amateur producers and bands etc They look for a mic and ways for the singer to sit in the is totally stupid no professional producer ever does this, You must build the whole song and mix around the singer or else your putting the cart before the horse. Think Kenny G, Acker Bilk is a perfect example, go listen to stranger on the shore, it was a world wide hit back in the day, he was the Kenny G of his generation, but he played the Clarinet people always say they can't get the Clarinet to sound good in a mix it's not meant to. You need to tailor the whole song instrumentation EQ to fit in with support and make that lead instrument blend and shine modern mixing technieques focus on the whole mix too much and not the goal.

Just purchased the Beta 58A from Amazon for $137. I already have an SM58 so thought I'd give it a try.. SM58's are $99 almost everywhere, so only $38 more seemed like a deal. This will replace my Audio Technica ATM27HE which died and Technica discontinued it and will not even repair it. Great mic when it worked but very bad customer service. Mic was never abused either.
