Balalaika teacher here. It's not obligatory to use nylon strings on it (orchestral type), there is the folk balalaika were steel strings are used.

I want balalaika, but it's impossible to get it here, and to import it by online shopping is problematic because of customs. It's probably easier just to go to Russia and buy it there or just to make it myself

Y’all who are saying you can’t get one in your country, make sure to look around properly. I got one from Ukraine on eBay and then a month later, walking around town, I saw like 5 of them hanging on the wall in a music shop. To be fair the guy restores mandolins and other unusual string instruments, but there’ll be places like that in the US or wherever too. I’m in NZ and I never expected to find one here.
