Confederate Lieutenant General James Longstreet is one of the most controversial figures of the American Civil War. His political views after the war turned a lot of his former comrades against him. Critics attacked him for his choices at the Battle of Gettysburg, his absence at Chancellorsville, and many other military aspects. In this biography, I will highlight the life of this most interesting commander from the Civil War and illuminate his private and public life. In this episode, we learn about Longstreet saving the day at the Second Battle of Manassas.

Thank you for not referring to the battle as "a draw." The Confederates had to abandon their entire campaign, their offensive ability was completely shattered, and the Union held the field. That's a Union victory. Just because they didn't follow up with an immediate, subsequent, separate battle to try to end the Army of Northern Virginia, that doesn't take away the fact that the Union won a clear victory at Antietam. This video was great, as always!

That story of Longstreet holding his Staff’s horses while they fired cannon was always amazing to me!! First heard the story on Civil War Combat and I was amazed!!

I did a walking tour of Sharpsburg and the battle fields with my sons scout troop, it was just after corn was harvested, it was a spooky place.

Longstreet was a great general and a true soldier. He followed orders as he was doing at Gettysburg and other places. Too bad he was so misunderstood but I think he was a perfect complement to Lee and his engineer mind.

Good discipline keeping your eyes on your subject and off the myriad distractions such as the lost order, Harper’s Ferry and Jackson’s march to Sharpsburg

Sure would like to see you do a mini series on general Wade Hampton - also a governor and senator post war. Hampton is a very interesting study . He was one of two men to join as a private and reach the rank of general - he enlisted in the legion which he raised and carried his name as a private but was elected by his men as col. With no formal military training he was a natural horsemen and grew up practicing swordsmanship with his grandfathers revolutionary war sword and hunting bears . He was wounded 5 times and killed men with his solingen bladed long sword at East cavalry field Gettysburg where he entangled with 3 Michigan cavalrymen splitting one of their heads clean in two, killing 2 and wounding the third while also being shot and slashed in the encounter . In another battle he saw both of his sons shot down in front of him, 1 fatally . He commanded the entire ANV cavalry after Stuart’s death and won th largest cavalry battle ever fought in North America at trevilian station . He also is famed for his great beafsteak raid . A prolific bear hunter before the war he was known to have killed at least one bear with a knife . Teddy Roosevelt wrote about his bear hunting exploits as did other writers one of whom partook in a bear hunt with him. He is worth a highlight for sure ! At cavalry field Gettysburg he led a charge from the front yelling “charge them my brave boys charge them”

At least, in this battle Longstreet has a sense of humor. Peyton Manning fought in the Civil War? The quarterback?

Excellent as always. The mention of Peyton Manning is like the cherry on top of the world's best sundae.

Have you read Harold Knudsens book on Longstreet? It’s great, and worth reading

I was at the Pry house. George B was too far away from the action on 9/17/1862

I proudly say I don't or didn't have any descendants in the confederate armed forces whatsoever. What a disgrace that would be. Shame shame shame.
