My degree was a dual major in Logic and Linguistics (with a minor in Philosophy of Science) and the most important thing that I learned from my studies was that logic is at best meaningless and at worst just plain wrong.

Ultimately there are just two forms of logic - deduction and induction, with science being a special case combination of the two. Deduction starts with ironclad assumptions and uses ironclad rules of inference to create ironclad conclusions but all it does is reveal the underlying truth that was in both of these things, it does not create new knowledge. Induction takes multiple observations to create ironclad rules that (in theory) contain new knowledge, but which could at any time prove to be wrong, eg the Black Swan.

The best that logic can ever hope to do is order our thoughts and help us make sense of what we already know, it is useless as a way of creating real knowledge.

Yet, no one says that chess is right and checkers is wrong.
