Exploring Makarewa Falls, Staircase Falls.
(The 24.5m Makarewa Falls in lowland Southland was long known only to local farmers and hunters, but Makarewa Falls is now no longer a secret! But thats not all there is a 2nd waterfall called Staircase Falls about 30mins walk from Makarewa Falls.
Length: 16km return, Time taken: 6 hours return, some easy route-finding required / rough trail. No facilities. The closest public toilets are in Winton (20 minute drive from trailhead).
The first part of the Makarewa Falls Track is a unformed legal road that crosses the Middleton farm (private land). Please respect the farmers and livestock, and stick to the markers along the fence-line. I would not recommend this track after heavy rain, purely because of the bogs and mud.
The Makarewa Falls Track is accessed at the end of Mandeville Road, off Hall Road in the Hokonui Hills. It’s about 20 minutes’ drive from Winton through Browns on gravel roads. Or 45 minutes’ drive from Invercargill.)
