We are in south central Texas. I do this in August, using a different heat source. Simply put the items in the hot sun for an hour or so and it scrapes clean, no problem. No fire extinguisher required!

Some people use hot water instead of a torch to remove propolis.

thanks for taking the time to edit the video and posting. A heat gun would work really well too. Safer and it's cheaper than using propane.

Interesting. In our region most of the beeks “scorch” all the used BOXES and FRAMES in all the corners, cracks and on all surfaces as a way to kill any wax moth eggs, bacteria etc. So—David doesn’t feel it’s necessary—cool that saves A LOT OF WOR.

If you have room, put the box in a freezer for about 30 min. The propolis gets brittle and will scrap out easily. I clean beetle traps this way also.

I have seen others using that method and some heat the whole box like that as a means to help sterilize them but most do it outside. A heat gun would be a bit slower but both safer and more even. Also you might have noticed once liquid, the wood absorbs it sealing it like wax dipping.

I use my propolis to make propolis serum

Since you’re in a very cold climate then keep your boxes outside. Then scrap the excess propalis off the frame rest and the corners of the boxes. No need to scrape the sides of the boxes except to remove burr or bridge comb . The bees coat the inside with propalis for a reason.

I do this all the time with my boxes. You know what they say about cleanliness being next to Godliness.

11:10 maybe restrictions on cross county line drawn comb related to local virus transmission. I would like a certificate that these bees/comb were tested and clear of viral activity.

Excellent video, would suggest blue torch tank vs yellow map gas (hotter) and costs less and also understanding you might have had only that. Any chances of a video on installing cut comb in a frame ?

Hello David, have you had any luck with your keepers hive. I haven’t seen any update videos on it.

I commented about using a propane torch to help clean up a ways back. You probably already knew though LOL It does help!

Have you tried a heat shrink gun instead of a torch?

What now? How do you seperate the wax from propolis?

I've been doing that for a couple years now, and it's very satisfying

Wax and propolis in paper towel makes a great fire starter for fireplace

Hay next time use a electronic heat gun. That works just as good to.

a heat gun would prevent burning the wood
