Lauren Greenfield’s postcard from the edge of the American Empire captures a portrait of a materialistic, workaholic, image-obsessed culture. Simultaneously autobiographical and historical essay, the film bears witness to the global boom-bust economy, the corrupted American Dream, and the personal costs of late stage capitalism, narcissism, and greed.

About Generation Wealth:
For the past 25 years acclaimed photographer and filmmaker Lauren Greenfield (The Queen of Versailles, Thin, kids+money, #likeagirl) has travelled the world, documenting with ethnographic precision and an artist’s sensitivity a vast range of cultural movements and moments. Yet, after so much seeking and searching, she realized that much of her work pointed at one uniting phenomenon: wealth culture. With her new film, Generation Wealth, she puts the pieces of her life’s work together for in an incendiary investigation into the pathologies that have created the richest society the world has ever seen. Spanning consumerism, beauty, gender, body commodification, aging and more, Greenfield has created a comprehensive cautionary tale about a culture heading straight for the cliff’s edge. Generation Wealth, simultaneously a deeply personal journey, rigorous historical essay, and raucously entertaining expose, bears witness to the global boom-bust economy, the corrupted American Dream and the human costs of capitalism, narcissism and greed.

Money can’t buy: taste, class, compassion, wisdom, or enlightenment

“If you think that money will buy you everything and anything, then you’ve never had money.” As someone who grew up in a upper class family, this is so true. You just feel emptier after every purchase

No matter how much you have you’ll still feel empty. Like you have nothing at all. Being satisfied is one of the biggest things we should strive for.

People buy things they don`t need with money they dont have, to impress people they don`t like.

When death comes knocking, no one ever says, "I wish I had more of, this or that."
The wish is always, "I wish I would have spent more time with family."
True success, is being intimate with Peace.

The Seven Social Sins are:

Wealth without work.
Pleasure without conscience.
Knowledge without character.
Commerce without morality.
Science without humanity.
Worship without sacrifice.
Politics without principle.

I liked this documentary. It taught me a great lesson on the importance of being with your children. I think it was unintentional on the part of the creator, but all these people neglected their greatest assets, their families.

Interesting. I feel so happy that I have two kids that I get to see all the time. Chickens in the backyard. A hammock. A garden. And I don't have to pay for parking when I "go out". There were some people in this show where I could really see the self-loathing. And others who probably think I am talking about them, but I'm not. This is a little bit like watching Tiny House Nation. It is making me feel really great about my life. Thank you!

Ecclesiastes 5:10 Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless.

This reminds me of the happiness set-point theory, which I absolutely believe. In layman's terms, everyone has their happiness set-point. That point can be lifted temporarily, depending on your circumstances, but no matter how good your fortune, you will quickly return to your happiness set-point, feeling no better than before.

No amount of money will move the needle long enough to ensure long term happiness. Resetting your point can only be done through personal development, like gratitude & helping others. It works in the reverse, luckily. Studies show that, save for the death of a spouse or child, no matter your misfortune, you will return to your happiness setpoint, which admittedly may not be much.

The book, Happy For No Reason, explains the happiness set-point, explains how to change it and it also profiles people of great misfortune who not only bounced back, but learned to be happier than before.

The essence of oligarchy is that the billionaire class is never satisfied with what they have. They want more, no matter what impact their efforts have on working people.

People won't give a dollar to a homeless person 'cause they say they don't want to encourage drug addiction, supposedly, but they're okay with people becoming rich by doing bad things--by being greedy, selfish, and ruthless. As long as you have a lot of money, you're a better person--that's the message. They don't stop to think that maybe some people are poor because they refuse to be so selfish and ruthless. The jobs that involve caring for other people, the helping professions, are the lowest paying jobs in our society.
