Opposition parties call Park's arrest natural result, former ruling party expresses regret

Korea's opposition parties agree the arrest is a given considering all of Park's misdeeds, and it shows the law is impartial.
The Liberty Korea Party, which was in charge during Park's presidency, expressed regret that over the nation's history of leaders ending up in jail.
Park Ji-won brings us the contrasting reactions.
In a statement on Friday, the Democratic Party of Korea said everyone is equal in the eyes of the law,... and considering that the former president was the key person in the massive power abuse and corruption scandal, and how the investigation has gone so far, the arrest was the right decision.


"The arrest was justifiable based on the law and principles in accordance with the calls from the public and history and the desire for the truth and rule of law."

The People's Party said that granting the arrest warrant was an obvious decision based on the Constitution and the nation's criminal law.


"We should hold her responsible, yet it feels painful to see a former president arrested for the third time in history."

The minor Justice Party called the arrest tragic,... and criticized Park for bringing it on herself.
The party added the arrest showed the public that justice can eventually prevail.


] "From now on, money and power should no longer erode democracy nor undermine the rule of law."


"On the other side of the political aisle, more emphasis was given to the necessity of revising the Constitution... to reduce the power of the presidency... so the situation never happens again."

The splinter conservative Bareun Party said it respects the decision, but also stressed the need for constitutional revision.


"With the current system in place, this unfortunate history will be repeated, and the next president will not be an exception. The only way to get rid of the errors in the nation's presidency is to revise the Constitution."

The Liberty Korea Party,... which was the ruling party under the Park administration,... released a brief statement,... saying the situation is very regrettable and it hopes the country's history of presidents being arrested is never repeated.
