I Learned Italian in 7 Days - Part I

I think the way languages are taught in school is backwards to say the least. Very inefficient and demoralizing.

However, speaking a foreign language can be a really fun, exciting experience and a way to expand your world view. I wanted to both share how I approach language learning and also see how far I could push things in one week.

Short summary: Memorize top 1000 words, record yourself saying these words, combine words and create more advanced sentences, learn the most common verbs and important conjugation, watch movies/series or listen to music/podcasts and take notes so you can understand what the people are saying/singing.

He had a really good strategy, but he wasn’t a beginner, this changes everything.

L’italiano ha infiniti verbi e coniugazioni diverse e contorte, quando scoprirai il dialetto che cambia anche nel giro di 5km impazzirai. Nice job

A quick summary of this video:
1. Learn the top 1000 words for the language (use different methods: writing them all down and rereading again and again, record and listen to it again and again whilst doing another activity, associating the word with an action)
2. Learn most common verbs, tenses, their conjugation and connective words such as ‘on’ ‘and’ (try and understand the rules, and irregulars)
3. Try to immerse yourself in the culture by using technology to help you with your language learning (translate music, watch Netflix shows with subtitles, listen to radio stations and podcasts, read books)

Skipping words like "oven" and other kitchen-used words in Italian

It's a bold move, but let's see where this'll take us

To answer your questions about how I found the top 1, 000 words, it was basically just a Google search. It appears as though these lists are flawed, so you may need to do some manual translating for yourself - if you notice you use a word a lot in your native language, but don't know the translation, that's probably a good sign that you should look it up.

That being said, I think we should make a more reputable source online with a proper list of the top 1, 000 words in all languages. And I might your help to make that happen.

This is genius. Never thought about the 80/20 rule when it comes to learning languages.

That "click" is one of the most amazing feelings you can get, I've had it when I was learning English, it's like floodgates opening all at once. It's really hard to explain it but man, does it feel like you are on top of the world.

I’ve been trying to learn Italian for a couple months now.
I’m making progress, slowly but surely.
The verb conjugation has been the hardest, but I’m not giving up!
