Jared Watkin has seen a lot of change take place over the last quarter century of diabetes care.

But he’s never seen anything quite like now.

“The innovation advances that we’ve seen in the past five years have outstripped anything we’ve saw in the past 25,” said Watkin, senior vice president, Diabetes Care. “I think that’s great for people with diabetes, the ability to seamlessly link products now with smartphones. That is accelerating and I think that’s a great thing for outcomes and for people’s personal health.”

With all that’s come, what’s next? For Watkin, it’s the power of artificial intelligence to see what humans might miss.

“When you think about chronic disease management, one of things that’s important is the ability to recognize how glucose patterns are affected by medication, exercise, diet, etc. What AI is very good at is being able to spot patterns that escape even the most trained professionals. So the ability for AI to really direct therapy changes — personalized medicine for people with diabetes — is going to come along pretty quickly,” Watkin said.
