I see your Spike growth and raise you the un-nerfed Wall of Force

We put Spike Growth on the bow of our airship, recently. It becomes a pretty interesting spell when you can move the area around.

There is a genuine power fantasy here that i don't want removed. Ever since i watched Spiderman 3, and i watched Spiderman slam sandman's face into a moving train i have wanted to pull that kind of thing off. And they do this in all kinds of superhero movies! The grapple and throw into spiked terrain is cool as hell!

Spike growth is not problematic! In fact it's probably anti-problematic because of how it encourages teamplay around environmental hazards!

My rule: when you grapple a creature, you share the same square. To drag an enemy through spiked growth, you must take the damage also. Effectively only a raging barb will do the thing.

My dm always reminds us. If your characters can do it, so can the npc.

"Which, I'm pretty sure most tables allow"

As someone who has had to deal with a fair bit of bramble, I wouldn't. Especially if you're pushing the center of the mass between you and the other, most likely a creature that's fighting back, into the magic bramble. You're either both in, or both out.

I personally like standing on the edge of Spike growth as a earth genasi cavalier crusher fighter "Get back in there " 😂😂

my favorite build I've made is 24d4 + 2d10 + 14 damage with spike growth and eldritch blast (old handbook, 5th level)

I love that you warn about how it can be problematic if you don't discuss it at the table first - before you present a very problematic but undoubtedly fun concept (at least over the course of a one shot)

As a DM, One way Ive made normally mundane creatures more fun is just give them a constant spell effect. Two minotaurs with Greater Invis is awesome. Not every every encounter but I could see some creatures with perma JUMP spell would be funny. Also just jump in general can mitigate some of the control aspect.

I like the idea of a monk grapple with the grapple feat and multiclass into druid (or anonther class that have spike grow)

Throwing weapon are improved! The other strategy is to Ready some pushing attack.

As a DM, I'd feel the need to challenge the strategy pretty early. Spell casting enemies can nullify it easily with several low-level spells, and enemy melee monsters should have an easier time with the grapple saves. Interestingly enough, a monster can just stand still in the middle of the spike growth and force melee players to enter it if they want to hit them. It is a valid strategy for a spell caster to center Spike growth on themselves after all, because it only does damage with every 5ft of movement or when they move into it. Hell, 2d4 damage.. I could see many enemies taking that scratch and actually leaping into the middle of the spike growth if they meet the perception requirements

Imagine doing that with a monk that has the grappler feat now... you're not only moving really fast but also you're not slowed down while dragging someone

As a druid, spike growth, plant growth, gust and thorn whip where one of my favorite combos. Add my buddy the warlock and battlemaster fighter... good tines...

I was just talking about this. I think the fix is that you have to rule that it doesn't do damage on forced movement. Only for movement a creature chooses to make using their speed.
