Brilliant Steve. I'm currently reading the translation by JH Wisdom and Mark Murray; I hope it's the best one

That sounds so interesting! Your summary of Lermontov's life is fascinating!

Just bought this very edition as a part of a big online order I recently made. Just got it in the mail yesterday. Can’t wait to FINALLY read this one!

I think Miss Frieda is becoming more camera smart all the time. She reminds me of Gloria Swanson's line from Sunset Boulevard, "I'm ready for my close up Mr. DeMille." Of course, Frieda is much more beautiful. A Hero of Our Time sounds like something I would really like to read.

Thank you for the video, and another one to my wishlist. It seems there are a few other translations, beside the already mentioned: The Oxford Worlds Classics by Nicolas Pasternak Slater, the Graphyco Editions by J.H. Wisdom and Marr Murray and there is also a dual language edition, where I couldn't find the translator by the publisher Alexander Vassiliev. I'll see if I can find a german edition.

Pushkin and Lermontov: two tragic losses, those d— duels . . . I agree that more later Russian literature stems from Lermontov, maybe it was that Eugene Onegin is a poem, two great works though! Gogol might be the exception to that influence?

Some people think that Shakespeare’s characters are too energetic or too elevated for “real” humans. Lermontov would have fit right in with the best of them.

I wondered if we would get a Burr-Hamilton reference.

Good Gawd! If you know this much about Lermontov imagine when we get to Tolstoy or any Russian that passed 27! Add “Russian literature expert” to the long list of Steve’s expertise...

I just ordered a Penguin Classics Hero Of Our Time with a new translation by Natasha Randall. Do you know anything of her as a translator??
And this will be my first Penguin Classic!!!

I can't work out whether the pleasure is greatest when I see the thumbnail is a Penguin Classic I have read like today, or something new to me. Maybe the happiness when it is one I have read comes from relief that you won't be adding yet another thing to my long-term TBR. But you have cheated me this time as I now know I need to keep an eye out for a new translation of this one. I will try not to hold this against you too much.

I did not like parts of the dialogue in this black spine translation. Overall it was riveting but some dialogue broke down like childish squabbling
