Rare Spotting..! Rebuilt WDG3A resting with Auxiliary Power Unit being switched On..!

Ernakulam’s latest rebuilt loco #14666, fitted with Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) resting for a while at Udupi, as it hauls #56665 Kasargod-Passenger..!!

The train was waiting for #12223 LTT-ERS Duronto Express and during this period the AP Unit in the loco was switched on.

AUXILIARY POWER UNIT (APU) is an alternative source of power for a diesel locomotive and is generally installed in short hood of ALCo’s.

In Short, APU consist of a small diesel engine connected to an alternator and a small compressor.

When the APU is switched on, this power source prevents the batteries from getting discharged and maintains the required air pressure in the air brake system.

Also it reduces the fuel consumption. The V16 engine of a locomotive usually consumes 25 litres of fuel per hour, while APU consumes only 3 litres of fuel per hour, which results in massive reduction in fuel consumption.
