Britain joined the war to prevent a German-dominated Europe and contain the spread of Nazism, as well as to uphold its guarantees of independence on Poland. The diplomatic policy of Britain in Europe was always to maintain the balance of power, which suggests that no country in Europe gets too powerful as it may threaten Britain itself.

When Germany declared war on the USSR, Britain made non-aggression pacts, send material help and support to the USSR. It wasn’t because Britain was not sure if the USSR can survive the German onslaught, but because it wished to keep the Soviets fighting for a prolonged period. This allowed the western allies to adequately prepare for a counterattack against Germany.

When the tide of the war turned against Germany after the Battle of Stalingrad, it became clear to Britain that the concern has shifted from a German-dominated Europe to a Red Europe. Britain could not accept the USSR conquering much of European territory. As such, through fighting to the end, the western allies get to ensure that at least half of Europe is under capitalist rule.

In conclusion, Britain didn’t join the war to “gain” anything, but simply wished to avoid undesirable consequences. And by that objective, it sure as hell won WWII.

So Britain got the least Amount lost their empire even though they saved Europe because of their empire funding them to hold the war for a year and without them us would of lost the war as the Alaric was secured with the British egnigma machine
