Type of S7-400 Racks for Siemens PLCs

Unlike the one type of S7-300 rack, there are three types of S7-400 rack: CR, ER and UR. Each type has its own useful features.
The Central Rack or CR is a rack that can only be used as a main rack and has to be the first rack installed, not used as an expansion rack.
The Expansion rack or ER, is another type of S7-400 rack that can only be used as an expansion rack. These racks only have P-bus connectors, so we can only install I/O modules here.
Finally, the last type of S7-400 rack is the Universal rack. This is the most widely used rack with the S7-400 option because it can be used as both a Main or an Expansion rack.
