We will discuss Shigley Chapter 10-9 Fatigue Loading of Helical Compression Springs.

There is an error at the very end - I even question it in the video, but fail to find the mistake.
The problem is that I switched the calculation for midrange and alternating stresses. The correct midrange should be 82.3 ksi and the correct alternating should be 31.3 ksi. These values would give an ASME factor of safety of 1.3 for infinite life, and a Sines factor of safety of 1.84 for infinite life. Sorry!

At the very end when calculating the factor of safety, I made a mistake. The mistake is in the calculation of midrange and alternating stresses. I switched them! Midrange should be 82.3 ksi and Alternating should be 31.3 ksi. I basically have the minus and plus signs switched when I defined their equations. The FS should be 1.334 for ASME and 1.835 for Sines. Sorry about that!
