This is so bittersweet omg. What I got out of it was that the room was the embodiment of their relationship issues but they never address it hence why it’s the quiet room. The girl has her eyes covered because she doesn’t want to see the truth and the boy has his mouth covered because he doesn’t want to talk about it. The train tracks are like their relationship which seems to be going way off track. And the LEGOs represent how they have to tip toe around each other and their problems. Kinda like ‘walking on eggshells’. You see that when they were young there are barely any LEGOs & instead there are like lego walls built. When the girl finally decides to face the problems she cuts her ribbon then proceeds to cut his too making both of them confront their problems. I found it interesting how it looks like he’s about to say something but instead of covering his mouth, she covers his eyes.
I think the quiet room was representing them never talking about their relationship problems but in the past it was quiet because there was actually nothing to say because their relationship was stable.

Or this is all bs and in actuality they both just like sitting in a room called ‘quiet room’ with ribbon floating around them and the girl found them annoying and finally decides to cut them 😂 lol

Im struggling to understand the full meaning of this song. They dont want it to end but he wont acknowledge there's a problem so it just gets worse. With the lyrics here altered a bit from the self cover from ewe, I feel like its something more complex than just getting a divorce; they got married young but as time goes on the girl realized he still has growing up to do because he just keeps running away from their problems but they aren't kids anymore and the pain is stifling for both of them as they can physically feel the break up coming; they test the waters by trying to leave but it hurts from the thought of being alone so it fails and at the end the truth comes out that she still loves him but needs a break and she opens his eyes to how serious the situation is but promises to come back. He tries to chase her in the darkness but all hes able to do is watch her and hope she comes back like she said. ( Alternately i also feel like she freed them from the cycle of almost breaking up, opens his eyes so they can finally confront their problems, and together they leave this "quiet room", regaining their relationship outside of the 4 walls they began to hate. >.< its so hard to understand, send help, its driving me crazy.)

i have a theory, this was about two people who fell in love when both in a dark place in their life. they tried to get through it together, but one couldnt see what was making them so sad and why they were in such a dark place, and the other knew but couldnt say what was making them so sad. the love almost fell apart because of both of their depression but they got through it when one finally saw what was wrong and the other finally said it.

I remember sobbing to this song in middle school cause it reminded me too much of the relationship I was in. She had a bad home life and as her partner I felt that it was up to me to make her better, I was also just getting medication and therapy so I really thought I could help. It wasn't until high school and we went to different schools that I was able to learn that it was not my responsibility to make her better. She didn't want to get better and she was dragging me down with her. So when the girl shows how she fixes his flower pots, how spring no longer brought her happiness, and when she cuts their ribbons, let's out all of her emotions, and leaves him for her own sake instead of getting dragged down by him, I cried. I felt how she felt. Free, guilty, and never looking back. I wonder how she's doing now?

I feel as if the quiet room is facing their problems in the relationship, not just coming to reality with them but finally resolving them. When it comes to the "breakfast, lunch, and dinner. there isn't any flavor, can't savor. it tastes like it's all made out of paper, " it's probably meaning of having to talk but it is bland, trying to talk about problems and open up. the relationship is like paper, easily ripped and bland now. then it starts going, "I fell into a puddle, tripping overlies as I went sprinting off into the night, " which is like walking on eggshells, they hurt, you run into those lies and fall but get back up and keep running into the darkness, you'll find the light. "I'm breaking down inside, I can't do this anymore, " is the girl coming to terms with her suffering from this toxic relationship. she's in pain. When (i assume the male) goes on to tell her, "the feeling fades, just wait a little more, " is telling her to hand on, it'll get better this pain will fade. that's a lie. then about the seesaw, this one was tough to figure out but it's about the ups and downs their going through, a crowd watching. people watch relationships as their either fall about or grow stronger. everyone is expecting them to keep smiling as if nothing is wrong, that causes an aching heart truly. about "our tears were sparking like lights that make the stars shine bright, " which is basically -stars can't shine without the darkness- the tears being the stars shining through the darkness, they're sparkling. Then the train tracks, it's off the rails, just like what is happening in this relationship. tiptoeing around your problems, having fun, looking at the bright side, regaining that bond you once had...having fun, taking off their shoes and going with the flow is like taking a break from the problems just for a moment, going with the flow of life and having some fun. "So keep your eyes locked onto mine, and don't look away, " is like saying, "keep your eyes locked into mine, don't look at the problems." "Even if I couldn't remember why we were together, " is like forgetting. like getting into an accident relationship and not realizing how much you love them. having to learn and build up from literally nothing at all. I'm now at 1:36 of the video. the dead plants and broken pots are like the problems and the plants are their solutions, not very well thought out and make it worse. by watering the plants and fixing the pots, they're fixing only some of those problems and heartache, even if it's only a small portion of the situation. I'll also address now that the blindfolds their wearing is a way of coping. not wanting to see, no, choosing not to see. becoming blind to the problems at hand, they're afraid to speak up. the quiet room is the room where they chose not to speak of anything and instead just trying to fix it. they aren't communicating. I know everyone has heard this at some point but communication is KEY in a relationship. to know how your partner feels, mentally, physically, all that, their problems, how to possibly solve them, what to do. Realizing I was getting sick and tired of married life" is saying like being sick. being sick of everything, having a fever of everything being so hot and uptight. they're going threw hell and high waters. they're growing sick of the relationship, it is toxic. "Running far away, he was trying to escape, " he was trying to run from the pain, trying to desperately getaway.
“I’m hurting every day, could you tell me what to do?” he(r) pain shows more, the blindfold getting thinner and wearing out, she knows she'll have to face everything soon.

“This love was never meant for me and you”, " which is doubt. (s)he doubts their love together. doubt is always one thing that'll ruin a relationship, it'll lead to overthinking and pain. trust me.

Over the fireworks of water separating us two, " this is them feeling terrible, they're reaching out for help as they become separated, the fireworks going off and showing everyone the problem at hand, reaching out for as much help as possible making it loud. they're blindly dealing with the problems they don't wanna solve yet. the rush they feel isn't lonely it's empty. their relationship is at a stop and trying their hardest, yeah the rush is not going to be the same it's exhausting.

One more time" is them trying to keep positive, remembering the good times and the spark. Trying their best to feel happy, reciting something that's now bittersweet. the ballon he starts blowing up represents excuses; lies. you keep going and going blowing up with them until they pop and the truth comes out, you're startled and heartbroken everyone had to find out this way.




finally, they get tired of all the lies, the doubt, heartache, everything. they're coming to terms, building the courage. wanting to fix everything, stop procrastinating and wallowing in sadness and self-destructive tendencies. just wanting it to stop, stop lying, speak up. they cut the blindfolds, forcing themselves to face everything together which means they'll have to leave the quiet room, the problems aren't quiet anymore and neither will they be. they just want the truth.




being lead towards the solution to everything, don't look back on the past! lock your eyes with mine sweetheart, let's go. quiet room has been one of my absolute favs for a little while and I'm glad you got around to covering it. <3

But holy shit I'm watching the video again with the English lyrics and catching on to how filled to the brim it is with symbolic visual stuff so I suppose I'll contribute to the debate about the song's meaning (mostly the movie/visual elements) in the comments. This will probably be a really long essay kind of comment so be prepared please. I hope it makes sense for the most part.


tl;dr
couple in a failing marriage gets a divorce.

(part 1)

Basically this song is pretty bittersweet. At least how I see it, it is about a couple (probably married) who is going through some relationship issues and eventually separates. The pair's relationship is represented by the floating white bands/ribbons/paper strips around their heads, which is very similar to the paper chains at 0:17 and at other parts of the video.

It is clear that they do not have the same connection that they used to when they first met. Already in the first few seconds of the PV, before the "quiet room" sign is even hung up, we can see that the passage of time for the two has probably not been entirely happy.

The initial few quick shots act as before/after type pictures (and they won't be the last of them) symbolizing the course of time and their relationship. In the first one, the empty globe of a clean looking-room becomes stuck with pins (presumably the places they've traveled over the years); items on the dresser are messed about; the large potted plant to the side wilts; and new, more recent pictures are hung up on the wall (but noticeably, they are covered up by light blue squares, which will be relevant later).
In the second, three potted plants die and crack apart. And in the third set of images a clock falls over and breaks open, which again relates to the theme of time. These three same sets of images actually appear again before the end of the video so watch out for them. Repetition and recurring motifs are abundant through the PV.

Following the title of the song are two more frames for the credits. Keep these two in mind as well, but particularly the first one with the same sort of pictures blacked-out with blue squares.

Then the singing begins and we see the couple for the first time, with bands covering up their faces, along with flowers.
Notice that the male has the paper specifically obscuring his mouth, and that the female's is specifically wrapping around her eyes. I checked and this is consistent throughout the video.

So I’m unsure about this part but I think that besides representing their relationship, the bands could also stand for some sort of difficulty in communication between the two, driving a wedge inbetween their feelings for one another. Maybe the boy (the mouth) can't communicate his desires well enough (“calling out, I don’t make a sound”), or the girl (the eyes) can't see/pick up on the things he does try to communicate to her. I heard someone speculate somewhere that maybe it's about some physical disability like blindness or deafness (hence "quiet room"), which is interesting, but I think the cause of the rift in their relationship isn't that significant to the song's overall meaning. It could be depression or another mental illness for all we know, as someone else commented; there is something that looks to be a bottle of medication in the aforementioned early frames of the video.

Anyway, most likely the first half of the song is spoken from the point of view of the male: the narrator addresses the female directly when she is crying, and many lines involve the mouth, the part of the body that the man has covered (the uselessness of speaking, the flavorlessness of eating).

I also mentioned the flowers, which you can see at 0:31. There will be more flower symbolism later on, but I believe the flowers to represent something possibly like happy memories, or remaining positive aspects to their relationship that the couple, moreso the female (who is sitting alone amongst the potted plants before the male appears), are still holding onto in their shared hopes of waiting out the bumps in the road and once again reviving the flame they once believed they had ("the feeling fades, just wait a little more").

The flowers and plants are things that need to be maintained and watered and cared for, lest they die of malnutrition, which is kind of like how the relationship between the two characters is slowly deteriorating. When all of the flowers die, so too will their relationship, as there won’t be anything left for either of them. (The "r" on the quiet room sign is a small flower, hinting at the significance of the flowers.)

Next the point of the seesaw is to make an analogy between the ups and downs or unsuccessful back and forths in the relationship of the two, and to show that although they're moving, it's pointless and they're not getting anywhere. Next, we see the lights are turned off and the male character pulls the girl along as they start to "dance" together during the chorus, in what is probably their bedroom (which contains a train set and some Lego bricks). What is interesting is that right when the question of whether or not they will promise to be together is asked, the boy reaches for the doorknob to leave, as if his answer is no. He is then either stopped by the girl or changes his mind as they next are seen collapsed onto the bed in a heap. To me this is probably just a metaphor for him doing something to try and compromise/escape from their relationship (like cheating?) rather than him literally trying to leave a room, and his wife or the thought of his wife prevents him from it.

Rewatching this two years after that first time my meaning of this has changed. Im fully aware its supposed to be about a couple whos relationship is struggling but it feels more like two versions of me. One is little me, not knowing its okay to transition, still being traumatized by the people ive had to remove from my life. Two is current me, knowing that it still hurts and that things may never truly be okay, but that its getting better everyday and we just have to keep moving forward. The way the characters speak to each really reminds me of my old vs current mindset and its crazy.
