Productivity Guilt #SHORTS

PRODUCTIVITY GUILT…⁣ #SHORTS
That continual nagging feeling that you haven’t done enough… That you’re so far behind… That you can’t take a break because you don’t deserve it…⁣

Sound familiar? 🤷🏻‍♀️⁣

It’s quite common among high achievers, and could also a ‘symptom’ of imposter syndrome and high functioning anxiety.⁣

If this is something you experience (It is for me!) here are 3 suggestions that might help;⁣

1️⃣ Accept You’ll Always Be Imperfect⁣

Perfection isn’t the standard you want to be aiming for… Instead, strive for ‘human’. What does that mean? Well, you can have high standards and strive for excellence, but also know that you’re only human and only have so much you can fit in your mind (‘cognitive load’) 7 into your life. And guess what… mistakes come with the territory!⁣

2️⃣ Don’t focus on the Gap between Current Self & Ideal Self⁣

One of the reasons why you feel this ‘guilt’ is that you’re not where you want to be. You have this vision of your ‘ideal’ self which is more disciplined, more successful, more of who you want to be… and you become fixated on the giant gap between this state and where you actually are. Instead of looking at the gap, focus on what you’re doing each day to take one small step closer to the goal state.⁣

3️⃣ Prioritize rest⁣

One big mistake you might be making if you’ve fallen into the trap of productivity guilt is that you keep pushing to the point of diminishing returns. You’re no longer ‘productive’, but you don’t stop (‘hello guilt!’). Yet, if you just took the time to rest, charge your body & replenish your mental battery, get this - you’d be even MORE productive, getting more done in less time!⁣

What about you? Have you experienced productivity guilt?⁣

While I am not studying, I always feel bad. To put that problem down, it’s important to understand it in the first place. Thank you so much, you have made it clear for me :)

Love this message, so many of us get caught up in keeping busy because of productivity guilt. What makes it so hard to change is the reinforcement by society and the people around us, who tell us that working, achieving and being busy all the time is what we should be doing to have a happy and fulfilled life. Thanks for sharing :)

As a guitarist/ songwriter

I can definitely relate to what you're saying.

Whenever I am lacking behind my expectations, I tend to get depressed.

Yesterday I couldn't play a simple pentatonic solo without being sloppy.

That took a major toll on my mental health

Happens frequently when in lock down, it so easy to procrastinate when you are at home and alone.
