Martin Luther King Jr. led the movement in the United States to secure equal legal rights for African Americans. For his efforts, in 1964 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

King used biblical references throughout his speeches. In his Nobel lecture in Oslo, Norway, King used the story of the exodus in the Bible as a key inspiration. “The yearning for freedom eventually manifests itself.

The Bible tells the thrilling story of how Moses stood in Pharaoh’s court centuries ago and cried, ‘Let my people go.’ This is the kind of opening chapter in a continuing story.”
