Well its that time again. Time to check out what the differences are between different pressings of an album. Up for this round is Relaxin' With The Miles Davis Quintet. I compare the 1996 Analogue Productions Stan Ricker cut, The 2015 OJC NewBury Comics exclusive clear and the new Craft Small Batch cut by Bernie Grundman.

Which one is the best? Pull up a chair, hit play and find out.

I believe the 2013 will be the reissue cut by kpg. Thanks for the shootout!

Try using a mono cartridge, I've found that the "drift" you refer too can derive from stereo cartridges, I've also found that the greater the separation on the stereo cart the more noticeable this "drift"

I just got around to watching your video since I wanted to do mine on fresh listening before I listened to anyones takes.

That being said I essentially agree with your thoughts on the Craft.

One thing though I’m not sure I’m getting what you’re calling a “drift”?

I went back and listened to both the Kevin Gray AP and Craft track A3 and I didn’t hear it on either. But I could be missing your point.

What I did hear was 1-3 tape dropouts and what sounds like a clumsy edit (splicing a broken section of tape?) during Miles last solo. It’s SUPER subtle though and I didn’t pick up on it first time through. Those things are noticeable on both of my versions.

Cheers

Do all of them have channel drop out or is that the drift you refer to?
AP had 3 masterings on the Miles Prestige. The Kevin and Hoffman 45 box, Stan Ricker 33 box and Kevin Gray 33s.

Should an original pressing being this comparison?

Gonna give my Craft copy a listen to soon. The packaging is stellar though; better than the other small batch releases, maybe? I don't own any, but just based on what I've seen on Youtube. Big congratulations on the continued success of your channel, you deserve it. Be well.

Not all OJCs are digital of Relaxin of course but I found the Craft way too harsh and bright. The higher transparency sacrificed the mids compared to other versions (most importantly the “latest” AP Kevin G) I’m totally disappointed in the Craft version for the price - it feels way too boosted. Maybe it is the one the step process. While comparisons are great (and you do a great job!) on some level Craft should be judge on its own because of the price. Thanks so much for posting this great video.

I have the Craft and the OJC (non limited). OJC by a mile. Way more punch, low end and clarity. For 1/10th of the price! Craft should be embarrassed.
